Mikuni Folsom: A Sushi Night Out That Turned Into a Whole Story

Mikuni Folsom: A Sushi Night Out That Turned Into a Whole Story

|

If you’re ever in Folsom and craving sushi, like legit good sushi, Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar is one of those places you just have to try at least once. And if you’re like me and my team? You’ll be back again two days later ordering the same fire rolls like you didn’t just do this already.

While I’ve definitely had my fair share of sushi in SoCal (we love a small, hole-in-the-wall spot), Mikuni is on a whole different level. We ended up going here not once… but twice in the same week. Because when something hits, it hits.

First Impressions: “Wait… this is a sushi place??”

We walked up to Mikuni Folsom and I swear my brain short-circuited for a sec. The place is huge, like “how do they fill all these tables?” huge, and the outdoor patio overlooks water with a fountain that lights up in the evening. It felt like the type of place where you accidentally spend too much money but don’t regret a single bite.

The vibe is energetic but still gives you enough space to chill and talk with your team. And yes, the perfect mix of lighter dinners if you’re being “responsible”… and rolls stuffed with all the goods if you’re absolutely not.

The Food: The Part You Actually Care About

Let’s get to the important part: the sushi.

I ordered Tuna Sliders #2, which is basically a tiny flavor explosion made of tuna wrapped around spicy crab mix, avocado, sauce, panko scallops, sesame seeds, and a little sriracha kick.

My colleague tried the Mikey Hand Roll, panko shrimp, avocado, crab mix, masago, onion, and sauce wrapped up in pure happiness. It was so good that when we talked about how we were here again, we had no regrets.

The Plot Twist: It’s More Than Great Sushi

Here’s where the story gets even better…

On night one, my boss casually mentioned how Mikuni is majorly involved in their community. That’s what made me start Googling them mid-meal like the slightly nosy person I am. And wow, there’s history.

  • The Arai family moved from Japan to Sacramento in 1985
  • Mikuni launched and quickly started winning awards for Best Sushi and Best Japanese Restaurant
  • In 2006, they formed the Mikuni Charitable Foundation
  • Now they operate 10 locations around Sacramento & the Bay Area
  • They employ over 1,000 team members
  • And they go through about 62,000 lbs of seafood and 3.5 tons of rice per week (mind blown)

They even had a seasonal menu supporting breast cancer awareness, with proceeds going to Thriving Pink, a local nonprofit. I love food with a purpose, and this absolutely raised Mikuni’s score in my book.

It’s so refreshing to see a successful restaurant chain still give back to the people who support them. It made the whole experience feel that much cooler.

Folsom vs. SoCal: Same State, Totally Different Vibes

Eating here genuinely opened my eyes to how different life feels in other pockets of California. There’s a slower pace in Folsom, families, calm evenings, peaceful scenery, and I kind of loved it. It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t loud. It was just good food and good company.

And honestly? That’s the best combo.
