Celebrating America's 250th Birthday in Lakewood

|

This year feels extra special. As the United States celebrates its 250th birthday, communities all across the country are finding their own ways to honor this historic milestone. I recently had the chance to attend Lakewood's America250 celebration, and it was one of those community events that reminds you why people love living here.

From the moment I arrived, there was an excitement in the air. Families dressed in red, white, and blue filled the Civic Center, kids ran from activity to activity, music played throughout the park, and everywhere I looked people were simply enjoying being together. It wasn't just another summer event, it truly felt like the community had come together to celebrate something much bigger.

One thing I didn't realize until recently is just how connected Lakewood is to American history.

Lakewood's American Story

Lakewood itself has a unique place in our nation's history. After World War II, the city quickly grew to meet the demand for housing as thousands of veterans returned home. Thanks in part to the GI Bill, neighborhoods like ours became symbols of the American Dream, giving families the opportunity to purchase their first homes and build a future.

Knowing that history made this year's celebration feel even more meaningful. It wasn't simply about celebrating 250 years of America, it was also about celebrating a community that grew because of one of the most important moments in our nation's history.

A Community That Came Together

One of the highlights of the celebration was the annual Civic Center Block Party.

There was something happening everywhere you looked. Live bands and DJs kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening, and I loved seeing people of all ages dancing together. The family activity area was packed with carnival games, inflatable slides, and activities for kids. I even attempted the hammer strength game...I didn't quite ring the bell, but I'd like to think I came pretty close.

One thing that really stood out to me was seeing multiple generations enjoying the event together. Grandparents, parents, and kids were all making memories in the same place. That's something you don't see every day.

Honoring Those Who Came Before Us

Beyond the fun activities, there were also moments that reminded everyone why we were there. The presentation of the colors, remarks from city leaders, and recognition of military members, first responders, and local organizations brought a sense of pride to the evening. It was a reminder that America's story continues because of people who choose to serve their communities every day.

Looking Toward the Future

As I walked back to my car after the fireworks, I couldn't help but think about what the next 250 years might look like. Events like this remind us that history isn't only found in textbooks. It's created by neighbors helping neighbors, families making memories together, and communities that continue to grow while honoring where they came from.
