Hello Friends and Fellow Lakewood Self Storage Connoisseurs,
Do you all remember the movie The Great Gatsby (The rendition that included Leonardo DeCaprio of course)? The film was released in the year 2013 and took the world by storm. If people were not talking about the amazing cinematography, they were discussing the soundtrack provided by the very popular Lana Del Rey. Another aspect to this film becoming so popular was the classic piece of literature that inspired it. It was a book every high school across America has included as required reading and needless to say to see a book on screen that you just took a quiz on was not something that commonly happened in the 2010’s.
A Literary Gem in Long Beach
The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald was originally published in 1925. It has been studied for its take on how social classes were treated, the issue of inherited versus earned wealth, gender, environmentalism, and race. With many important themes covered in this small novel, it's no wonder that this book published nearly 100 years ago still manages to influence us today. The reason I bring this up is because located in our neighboring city of Long Beach just 10 minutes away from our home at Lakewood Self Storage is Gatsby Books. This locally owned bookshop is a nice mix of not just new, but used book collections. It is open 7 days a week to serve your literature needs from 10am- 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am-6pm Saturday- Sunday. They have a nice selection and the staff is friendly, helpful and always ready with recommendations. They have books for all ages and to top it off they have a cat in store just relaxing in bed. Also, it’s rumored by one of our own coworkers that this cat is on staff so they can assist you in selecting your next purchase. At least that's their explanation as to why they couldn’t leave a copy of horror classics behind during our tour of the bookshop.
Embracing the Bookworm Lifestyle
While we all know that e-readers exist, I am sure I am not alone when it comes to having a physical book collection. I am very much guilty of preferring a physical copy of my favorite book versus a digital version. Being able to fill those bookshelves at home with a vast collection to have a pseudo version of what Belle experienced when she walked into the Beast's grand library. I know I’m not alone in that inspiration, but yes in many of our homes we only have so much room and there is no end to the many wonderful books we would all like to collect. That’s one of the many amazing perks of self storage, you can always store your read books as you fill your tbr (to be read)shelves at home.
Not only do they sell books, but they have quite a few things on display throughout the store and unique finds like small bird skulls, sets of old dentures, and other macabre items that give a dark academic edge to the store. It’s truly a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with a good cup of coffee while hunting for your next great book.
Do you have vintage books? Gatsby Books has used books for sale and some of these do include older editions of classic books. While amazing to own, they can take some work to maintain in good condition. However, fret not as here at Lakewood self storage we also offer air-cooled units that help maintain that cool temperature for your special hardcovers and paperbacks. Any book aficionado knows that older editions and many vintage books need to be kept in cool dry areas for the books to continue to thrive. Luckily, we at Lakewood offer just that at a few size options for your needs so treat yourself and get that classic edition of The Godfather or Dracula.

This bookshop also has monthly events with different authors who come by the shop to discuss their latest release and they have a writing group held every month. So, if any of you are interested in writing or already are a writer, they offer a group every 2nd Tuesday of the month and is open to all styles and genres. I highly suggest going to their website and checking out all events. There's something for all of us bibliophiles to enjoy and take part in. Now don’t forget once you get your shelves at home full, pay us a visit after and we will get you a great deal on a unit for your ever-growing book collections.Â
