Cypress Self Storage is a relatively new storage facility in the City of Oakley, California. Being part of the Smart Self Storage family, we have storage experience for over 40 years. Cypress Self Storage opened its doors for business in August 2020. Despite the pandemic, we felt the love of the community while keeping everyone safe by sanitizing and social distancing.
This blog features our Interim Manager at Cypress Self Storage, Gary, who has been with the Smart Self Storage family for almost 2 and a half years. In this blog, we will be talking about Gary's experience working for Smart Self Storage in the beautiful Oakley Community.

Q: How long have you been a part of the Smart Self Storage family?
A: I've been here for almost 2 and a half years. We saw a lot of growth when I was at another Smart Self Storage location – Stanford Ranch Self Storage. We went from 36% occupancy to 98%. So, that is something I'm proud of.
Q: What do you like about working at Cypress Self Storage?
A: Self storage in general, you have to multitask and I like that. I constantly work with people and coming from a sales background, I could say that that's my forte. We have a sense of individuality as well aside from team work.
Cypress Self Storage is a gorgeous facility. I was here when it was opening so I have a sense of loyalty to it. When we show people around the facility, there is music playing which is new to them – they smile and they think that it's cool. No other self storage that I know of has music playing like Cypress Self Storage does.
Q: How long have you lived in this area?
A: I currently live in Lincoln, California. I'm a Bay Area native and I've been here since the 80's. Due to my father's job, we moved around a lot but we always ended up in the Bay Area.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant?
A: Mickey's Pizza is the best one in town in my opinion. But I also have a black belt in cooking – I love cooking.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do in the area?
A: I live near a golf course and there's a ton of things to do. I recently bought an Ebike and that's the best investment. I could bike to work if I wanted to and it's awesome. I show it off to everybody.
Q: Do you feel that Cypress Self Storage is a part of the community?
A: Yes, absolutely. We're in the middle of it all, just across the street from Iron House Elementary School! There's a lot of growth in this area and everything is well thought out. People also drive by Cypress Self Storage and they stop by and talk to us comfortably.
Q: What is something that you’re proud of regarding Cypress Self Storage?
A: Cypress Self Storage is a beautiful facility – I'm proud of the fact that I was here when it first started out. There was nothing here before, so to be back and be a part of this facility - I'm proud of it.
Q: Do you like talking to customers about Cypress Self Storage?
A: Definitely, I love to show off this place - it's such a beautiful and unique self storage facility. As I mentioned, people feel comfortable stopping by and chatting with us. I think that's great.
Q: What does Cypress Self Storage offer that other self storages might not?
A: The environment – it's a super clean, pristine place. They've thought of everything and the lobby is like a hotel lobby. We even have Starbucks coffee and people find that fascinating. The facility is very open with drive up units. Unlike anywhere else, the music - people always ask me what playlist I'm playing because they love it.
