I can't tell you how many times I've spent a long day working in the yard, or transferred another truckload of items from my garage to self storage, and woke up the next morning feeling like I aged a few decades overnight. My back felt stiff and painful. My legs were heavy; like they're made out of wood. And every time I lifted one of my arms, I felt like I was still lifting that sofa, or those potted plants, or all of those boxes and bags.
Over the years, I've learned two things about over-extending myself physically. The first thing is to try to not do it, at least, in as much as that is possible. Some days you just have to get everything done at once, even though you know how you're going to feel the next day. The second thing that I've learned, is that a quick trip to my chiropractor can get me back to normal a lot faster, and with a lot less pain.
Why See a Chiropractor?
There are many reasons you might want to visit a chiropractor, other than the one I already shared. People who have been in an accident, whether it was automotive related, or simply tripping over something at home or work, can benefit greatly by having a spinal adjustment. In situations like accidents, our spines may become misaligned, either by a direct injury to the back, or due to a muscular injury that causes one limb – or a group of muscles – to become stiff or tender, causing us to overcompensate by working the opposing limb more.
If you've ever pulled a muscle in a leg and spent a few days limping, you probably already know how quickly that can cause your back to begin getting stiff. But you don't have to wait for an accident to make an appointment for an adjustment. There are several services that chiropractors offer, even some for people who are in the best of health. Here's a quick list of a few of the services offered by the local chiropractors in our area:
Back Pain: Whether it's due to overexertion, trauma, a spinal abnormality, or even just bad posture, a few quick adjustments may be all you need to get back to feeling normal again.
Sciatica: There are two major branches of nerves that run from the spine down the back of our legs. When these get compressed or irritated, you'll know it. It really is a painful condition. Having an alignment performed could alleviate the pressure on these nerves, and hopefully take away the pain.
Headaches: If you suffer from routine headaches, or even migraines, it could be that you're in need of an adjustment. Re-aligning the vertebrae can help relieve the tension that may be causing those headaches.
Massage Therapy: Whether your muscles are just sore from working out, spending the day doing chores, or from an injury of some kind, massage therapy can help to ease the pain, as well as soften stiff and inflexible joints.
Sport Physicals: These days, you can’t sign your kids up for any sport without the agency who manages the events requiring a physical. But that doesn't mean you have to make an appointment with your pediatrician. Most chiropractic offices can provide the basic information that is required for those forms, and some of them even keep copies of the forms on hand, so you don't have to waste a trip picking one up beforehand.
DOT Physicals: Not all chiropractors are certified to perform Department of Transportation physicals. Only those who are nationally certified medical examiners.
Laser Therapy: One of the newest techniques approved by the FDA. In short, Laser Therapy helps to reduce inflammation, decrease pain, and accelerate the healing of injured or inflamed tissue by stimulating the self-healing properties already present in our bodies.
Products and Supplements: Though the selection of what each location offers varies, you can find everything from pillows that promote proper sleeping posture, to nutritional supplements developed to help support bone integrity, or recovery from muscular, neurological, disc or joint injuries, too.
