Variety is the Spice of Life in a Great Bakery
When I list all the items you can buy and eat at Harvest Bakery and Café, you'll probably wonder how this could be possible. I wondered that myself. Now the secret to learning the "why and how" of anyplace you love is to show up when it's not busy, if possible. I dropped into Country Harvest Bakery and Café at 10:47 a.m. on a Tuesday. There was a bit of a lull which not only gave me a chance to look around without getting in anyone's way, I was able to chat with the gracious server named Christie.
Oh my gosh! Where do I start? Truly, I say this without exaggeration, this place is phenomenal! I saw stickie buns, cinnamon rolls, five kinds of cookies, carrot cake, a fruit pie and four cream pies, cupcakes, chocolate mousse parfait, rice crispy bars, cheese cake, and candy. Plus, there were gluten-free-desserts as well. The owner, Patti Storer, is also the chef and works endlessly to keep everything sold at the shop both fresh in quality and in variety. For example, the day I was there, someone called in for an order of cinnamon rolls and bought the last four because there was only one dozen baked that day. Store limits the amount she bakes to what is going to sell the day it's baked; everything is guaranteed to be fresh.
Gluten Free, Low Carb and Reduced Sugar Desserts
It's so nice to visit a bakery and be able to enjoy a treat without veering too far from whatever eating habits you practice. I noticed right away that there were four gluten-free sweet treats that looked delicious. There were gluten-free cookies and brownies! I wanted something that had very little added sugar so I had the berry and apple pie. The filling was sweetened almost entirely by the fruit's natural juices! When I asked Christie if there was any talk about expanding the reduced sugar desserts, she said that Country Harvest Bakery and Café was going to start making keto friendly desserts beginning with a cheesecake recipe that she'd been making for over a year. She said she was very excited to see the bakery going in the direction that changed how people thought of a bakery. She and Storer want Country Harvest Bakery and Café to be a place where a group of friends could meet and have everyone eat comfortably and according to their dietary preferences. I say that's a sweet deal!
But Wait There's More! There's Soup, Sandwiches, Quiche and Coffee!
If you want something besides dessert, Country Harvest Bakery and Cafe has several choices that hit the spot. I saw two kinds of soup selections that had been simmering just waiting for the lunch crowd. Whether you want soup, a sandwich or maybe both, please know you won't be sorry with your choice. I saw someone order a chicken salad sandwich that made me want to go run around the block several times in order to be hungry enough to start my meal over! Oh, was it amazing looking! I also saw that the quiche wasn't just your average bacon, cheese and onion affair. Oh no! There was one that had chicken, chile, sun-dried tomatoes, and bell peppers and topped with generous amounts of cheese. Oh boy!
Those of us that compare bakeries to best friends know that a bakery is only as good as its coffee, right? The coffee must be as good as the dessert or trouble may be brewing just around the corner (yes, a pun that slipped in just when you thought the coast was clear). Well, don't worry. Country Harvest Bakery and Cafe has coffee that is just as fresh, delicious and rich as everything else served there. I loved every drop and crumb of my coffee and pie combo.
Handcrafted and Homemade
In addition to all the amazingness I've mentioned before this, Country Harvest Bakery and Café has products they sell in order to promote local farms and other businesses in the Lincoln area. Because just like a great friend, Country Harvest Bakery and Cafe isn't just about itself, it’s about supporting others. There are handcrafted soaps and organic lavender products, handmade aprons, olive oil, gourmet mustard, BBQ sauces, cooking sauces, balsamic vinegar and homemade jams! Everything was beautifully displayed to compliment the cozy and welcoming vibe that starts with sidewalk seating and continues throughout every inch of Country Harvest Bakery and Café.
