Services for the Community
The first public library was established in 1833 by a group of citizens who wanted to provide the community with access to books and information. When you visit Rocklin Library, you can see that the mission of the library system's founders is carried out. The original Rocklin Library opened in 1943 as part of the City Hall Building. It remained there, operating 6 hours per week until it was moved across the road. In 1985, through efforts combined between Friends of the Rocklin Library, Placer County, the City of Rocklin, and Federal funding through the library system, Rocklin Library had a new home where it lived until 2011. Again, through combined efforts, the library got a new home in its current location. The Rocklin Library consists of 16,600 square feet and offers a state-of-the-art experience for its patrons.
First Things First
Rocklin Library is a two-story building with great care given to how space is used. It is in a beautiful location overlooking a pond that is home to wildlife, including geese and ducks. Many of the study and workspaces for adults and children are situated with views of the pond area. The first floor is beautiful! It's well organized as a family space, complete with a huge children's collection, a train table, and lots of seating. One really neat feature of the first floor is the reservable community room. It's so well thought out because it can be used as one large room or configured into two rooms with movable walls.
The first floor also has an abundance of work areas and several public computers. On the subject of computers in the public library system, it's incredible how hard public libraries try to meet the needs of those they serve. According to the American Library Association, 98.9 percent of all public libraries offer free access to computers AND the Internet! That's a 400 percent increase from 1996 when less than one-quarter of the country's libraries had computers for public use. Rocklin Library has Wi-Fi throughout the building, as well as its outdoor spaces and parking lot. There are ten Internet and Microsoft Office workstations, four self-checkout machines, two printers, one photocopy machine, and two AWE stations. An AWE station is meant for early literacy, so computers are self-contained, without an internet connection, and have a ton of learning software in English and Spanish to help kids develop early literacy skills in science, English, math, and the arts. Talk about a service to the community!
The Rest of the Story
(pun in the caption is doubly clever, right?) I really appreciate the Rocklin Library's use of the beautiful outdoor setting. There are two outdoor spaces (both with Wi-Fi). I also give much thanks to the dedicated work of the Friends of the Library. Their dedication is clear when you look at how well-stocked their Friends of the Library Book Sale room is. The planning that went into this library is also apparent as the library has bike racks and is accessible off a bus route and the Placer County Transit system. Every consideration was given to making this library as user-friendly as possible. The events are significant too! They include story times for all ages, a Read to a Dog session, and an Adult Book Club
I've been a big fan of libraries since my early years of using the library bookmobile (second grade, thank you very much). When I first visited the Rocklin Library, I couldn't WAIT to get upstairs, where the teen and adult book collections are located. While an elevator was going upstairs, I ran up the stairs for extra excitement and drama. When I got upstairs, I was speechless. The space is lovely. There are large windows, which give the impression of being in the trees. There's a view of that beautiful pond with so much comfortable seating; it's easy to spend hours lost in a book. Like on the first floor, there are computer workstations, but sorry, all say grown-ups have to go downstairs to play at the train table. Because I'm a library fan, I make a point to visit one during my travels. I am confident that Rocklin Public Library holds its own among the 131,848 libraries in the United States. That number is provided by the American Library Association. It includes a combination of public libraries, bookmobiles, libraries in public and private schools, special libraries (corporate, medical, legal, research, and religious), Armed Forces, and government libraries. Please check out Rocklin Library (low-hanging fruit of a pun) to see for yourself what a generous community resource it is.
