Roanie's Coffee and Café is a place I recently discovered that is right at the center of the buzz. Here's why: everything I love comes together here, and it's a hub for community connection. I love great coffee, animals, and a tranquil setting. I love places that invite a sense of community. After all the cafés and coffee houses I've tried over the years, I thought I'd seen it all. Believe it or not, Roanie's Coffee and Café is a café experience like no other I've visited. Read on to find out why this place scratches several itches (yes, it's pun season again).
Coffee as Smooth as Silk
If you've ever read a word I’ve written on this topic, you'll recall that elevated coffee is my thing. I love great coffee and won't say it's great unless it is. Roanie's Coffee and Café coffee is great, and it’s as simple as that. Here's what caught my eye first and told me this place is a legit source of excellent coffee. The coffee used comes from a third-wave specialty coffee supplier by the name of Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters. Founded in 2008 by Andy and Edie Baker, it's the result of Andy's upbringing in New Zealand’s espresso-driven coffee culture. So why is Chocolate Fish part of the name? Apparently, a chocolate fish is a sweet given as a thank-you for a good deed in New Zealand culture. This coffee source is perfect for Roanie's Coffee and Café because the brand was built around hospitality, slowing down over coffee, and gathering. That's exactly the vibe you catch the minute you walk in the door. Let me describe how it feels. You walk in and instantly notice that the café is a cozy part of a larger space that includes an atrium, outdoor seating, and the entrance to a gorgeous veterinary lobby. More on that in a minute. Back to the tour. The next thing you notice is baked goods that look like art. And here's why. Every single morning, Posh Bakery delivers an amazing variety of baked goods. I really can't even say enough about this to do it justice. I'll sum it up this way: everyone in our area knows that Posh Bakery is the top-of-the-line bakery. Anywhere quality baked goods are served; Posh Bakery is the source.
Each item is beautiful and the type of treat that pairs well with coffee. It reminds me of what you might find in a European café. The selection is tastefully narrowed down so quality is the goal. But it isn't so narrowed down that you ever get tired of the choices, because it rotates. Because there isn't a vast array of many kinds of each treat at a time, what is offered is clearly the result of fine ingredients, tastefully curated to feel special.
I can speak personally for two things I tasted that day. I landed on a cream-filled croissant, and because my husband had a breakfast burrito, I was able to sample that too. I won't spin tales here. The breakfast burrito was an A+ for its kind, but my cream-filled croissant was the best croissant I've ever tasted! The first bite alerted me to something I haven't tasted in a while: true butter. I didn't get a chance to ask about the source of the ingredients, but even without formal knowledge, my mouth identified that old-fashioned butter flavor that used to be front and center in our world. The outside had what looked like hand-folded layers that began gently crisp and ended smooth right before the savory cheese filling took over. The buttery, slightly sweet cheese filling was beautifully complemented by sprinkles of light chunks of powdered sugar. Rather than sprinkling on a fine dusting of powdered sugar, the baker added small chunks of sugar that were less sweet than normal sugar but, because of the grain size, were present enough to create a balance for the savory-sweet filling. I tell you, it was great, and I highly recommend you start with a croissant as your intro to Roanie's Coffee and Café.
New Café in Area Has a Strong Name
Roanie's Coffee and Café is named for its connection to Penryn Vet Clinic and Penryn Vet Clinic's connection to Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center. Did you follow all that? You will when you visit Roanie's Coffee and Café. Its “through-the-doorway neighbor” is Penryn Vet Clinic. That clinic was started less than a year ago and is an expansion of Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center. Therein lies the reason for the name Roanie's Coffee and Café, because a roanie is a nickname for a horse color style called Roan, a horse known for its beautifully blended coat of dark and light hairs. Like that striking mix of tones, Roanie's carries that same sense of depth, individuality, and ease. I've had the fun of “hosting” several people during their first visit to Roanie's Coffee and Café, and every single time, all agreed this is the place to go. Please treat yourself to all that is solid, smooth, and unique about Roanie's Coffee and Café. You'll be glad you did.
