A Journey Through Vintage Treasures at Bliss Market

|

Starting off a new year gives all of us endless opportunities to set fun goals as well as carve out new ways of living life, including fulfilling unidentified needs.   I started off this year with a fierce determination to let my curiosity and open mind be my guides as often as possible. And that's how I ended up at Bliss Market in Roseville. With almost no effort, you can have the same blissful experience. I know, a play on words so early in the game? Stick with me so I can explain why Bliss Market is so appropriately named.

Bliss Market is Devine Cultural Hub

It wasn’t until I walked through the front doors of Bliss Market that I realized how much I’ve missed taking a mental vacation and how easy it is. With over 130 vendors sharing a mid-sized store space, there's the perfect combination of cozy and vast. All at once, you sense a real community built on the shared love of vintage goods. But wait, before I say more about what is there, I want to explain that vintage, in this setting, isn't because it's centered on a season's yield of grapes or wine from a single year. But not to confuse matters even more, I don't want to imply that beautiful goods that may have a wine or grape motif aren't found here because they are. However, each vendor's overall vibe represents something from an example style from a certain era. So what happens when you stroll through each cozy aisle and visit a vendor's space is your brain is taken back to a different time and place. It's divine, with goods representing different eras from other areas around the globe!

Bliss Market is not only a cultural hub because many vendors bring wares from all other cultures; Bliss Market invites people to think of it as its own culture.   Customers are invited to participate in Bliss Market events like the enchanting Spring Tea Party. Those who attend are invited to dress up in their favorite spring attire (hat included) while enjoying complimentary tea and delightful treats.   The event welcomes the spring season with "spring-inspired" finds. This kind of event happens throughout the year, marking special occasions and holidays.

Bliss Market Cultivates Cottage Industries

In touring (well, more like gawking with a huge smile on my face) Bliss Market, my heart was warmed by the obvious enthusiasm and love the vendors put into their collections. Whether a fun gathering of kitchen towels with quippy phrases or jeans with one-of-a-kind embroidered designs, Bliss Market offers a great opportunity to share your creativity with others. One example is the work of Andrea McGowan, a textile artist and color enthusiast. Her tie-dye work is stunning, with rich colors and exciting patterns. It's obvious Andrea loves color, and I appreciate that she has a passion for using repurposed clogging, accessories, and home goods. If you love tie dye, please know you'll find the best version of it at Colorwheel in Bliss Market. But what is tie dye, exactly? And where did it come from? Read on for a bit of tie-dye info.

Dude, It’s Older than the Sixties

So, if you still use the word "dude," you probably relate to claiming this free-style form of art is a product of the 1960s. Hopefully, you don't make that claim as an answer during your turn in Trivial Pursuit.   While tie-dye's popularity comes and goes, its place in history dates back to ancient Asia. The earliest records of tie-dye come from Japan and China. People used natural dyes from leaves, roots, flowers, and berries to color their clothing. This was true in both China and Japan. In India, people also practiced tie-dyeing, although it was done slightly differently than in ancient Asia. Even in the US, tie-dyeing was around before the 1960s. It made a huge splash in the 1920s, but yes, it is the 1960s that people associate with tie-dye.   The 1960s tie-dye is synonymous with escaping from the strict societal norms of the 1950s and exuding free-spirited style.

But alas, it wasn’t until the 1980s that today’s style of tie-dye opened a whole new world of color. New types of dye hit the market, offering a greater choice in shades, color, and staying power. Even designers began incorporating this look into their products.

Lots to Choose From and Always Changing

One of the things that makes places like Bliss Market so fun is the variety, which means you can visit often and find something fresh, and you can shop there for a variety of reasons. For example, I have a few people in my life who are happy and surrounded by humorous items in their daily lives. One of Bliss Roseville's vendors specializes in coffee mugs, kitchen signs, coasters, and towels with great bits of wisdom/humor/sarcasm on them. Things like "Hold On, Let me Overthink This," "A Day Without Coffee is Like…Just Kidding, I Have No Idea," and "Life is Like a Helicopter. I Don't Know How to Operate a Helicopter."  My favorite one is a kitchen towel that says, “Made With Love Means I Licked the Spoon and Kept Using It."  That funny towel prompted 11 minutes of a fun exchange with a fellow shopper I met while laughing together. And that really sums up what I meant at the beginning by a mental vacation I didn't even know I needed. Those unexpected, shared moments of levity in a pleasant setting with total strangers gave me a microdose of that effect I feel when in a complete change of scenery away from life's daily tasks. For your own mental vacation experience, please visit Bliss Market and enjoy yourself. You deserve it.
