After 80 Years, the Placer County Fairgrounds Disappear (Learn About @TheGrounds)

Formerly known as the Placer County Fairgrounds, now known as @TheGrounds - and the  name is not the only new addition!

Placer Valley Tourism officially took over managing the fairgrounds in 2017. They immediately re-branded and re-named it @TheGrounds and began planning the much-needed renovations.

@TheGrounds First Phase Is Complete

I attended the unveiling of the first phase of the renovation in the spring of 2018 that included renovations to the interior and exterior of both Jones Hall and Johnson Hall as well as the Garden Room; which are available for rental. I was pleasantly surprised as I walked into Jones Hall, its beautiful exposed wood beams and beautiful and abundant lighting give a feeling of simplicity and elegance.It is well-suited for business events or for a large party or reception. The parking lot also had a facelift and was re-paved with new lights installed. At the time of this unveiling, they announced the approved plans for Phase 2. As a Roseville resident for almost 20 years, I was aware of the significance of what I was witnessing.

At The Grounds Second Phase To Begin In 2019

I had the pleasure to attend an Economic Development meeting recently and learned more details about the current construction that just began and what the future holds from @TheGrounds CEO, David Attaway. Mr. Attaway has been the CEO of the Placer Valley Tourism for the past 6 years and also holds the position of CEO of @TheGrounds. His 25 years experience in the hospitality industry is proving to be a great asset and he has put together a strong team that works closely with him to bring his plans to fruition. 

Groundbreaking of the 190,000 square foot indoor, multi-use sport/event center was held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. An aggressive construction timeline is in place with an anticipated opening date of January 2020.  Having this facility allows the city of Roseville to attract large sporting events such as volleyball, basketball, martial arts, dance and cheer competitions as well as conventions that, up till now, have not been an option due to lack of space and facilities. The event center will also include a full culinary area with a full commercial kitchen, food storage area, meeting rooms, and banquet rooms.

At The Grounds Placer County

Trying to visualize how large a 190,000 square feet event center is? It will be able to hold 6,000 people, 500 trade show booths, 15 basketball courts or 30 volleyball courts. The first sporting event is already booked and confirmed; a Junior Olympics Championship will be held at the center in May, 2020.

I think most of us had the same questions. What is this going to cost? Who is paying for it? What is the anticipated revenue for Roseville and the surrounding area? According to Mr. Attaway, the estimated cost for the project is $36 million. He added that this project is a collaboration between Placer County and Placer Valley Tourism. Placer County has allocated $2 million and Placer Valley Tourism will fund its contribution by issuing bonds anchored by the organization’s fee structure. Additionally, each (Placer Valley Tourism) member hotel is paying $6.50 per room stay into the Placer Valley Tourism’s funds to contribute toward construction costs. The anticipated revenue to the area is estimated at $12 million annually.

While this second phase is under construction this year, you will still be able to enjoy many events at @TheGrounds, including the Placer County Fair that is set to run June 20 - June 23, 2019.
