Full disclosure here is best so I can manage expectations on this information. I'm not a lifelong bicycle rider. I don't belong to a riding group and haven’t spent more than two hours at a time on my bicycle. My first bike was an older cruiser-style bicycle handed down from an older cousin to me when I was eight years old. It was an adult-size bicycle from which I took many a topple. I learned to ride it in a small parking lot with an eight-foot drop on one side and a street with a steep slope that finished up on a busy street. Okay, busy by 1960s standards, but cars did drive by on it. I am proud to say I learned to ride that bike, but the relationship between that old hand-me-down bicycle and I didn’t foster a lifelong love of riding.
But as with many things as a person enters that second half of life, some early adventures are like life's call of the wild-they eventually come back and invite you to try them one more time. For me, that's bicycle riding. To make that happen, I had to buy a bicycle. Admittedly, I did so with great caution and purchased one on Facebook Marketplace for less than the price of a dinner out. While I was proud of myself for riding a bicycle again after decades of ignoring the activity, I almost repeated history by using an ill-fitted bicycle that was too heavy for me. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not interested in an ultra-light sliver of a bike because I plan on dressing in sleek riding gear and riding 100 miles in a day! But at this point in my life, I've learned a thing or two, and having the proper equipment is a big part of the joy of any activity. I learned about Bob's Cycle Center from an avid bicycle rider friend who said Bob's Cycle Center is a trusted place to shop for bicycle enthusiasts and has been in business since 1955. That's all I needed to hear because I want to go to where the people who take this activity seriously shop for the equipment they trust to keep them upright and on the road for miles at a time. And did I ever learn a lot?
