Discovering a New Favorite at Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta

|

Just when I thought I had tasted it all! Okay, not really, because the world is a big place, and we're fortunate to have an unending variety of food in our beautiful community of Roseville. But that being said, I am surprised I could encounter yet another favorite version of Mexican food. I do ask myself how many favorites a person can have before they are just list items. But wait, I'm going off-topic! One visit to Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta showed me that favorites are only limited by the imagination. Read on to learn why Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta will create a new favorite in your world.

Salsa isn't just a condiment; it's a dance of flavors on your tongue

If you enjoy eating out and trying restaurants, you probably have measurable standards you apply to each new restaurant you try. Of course, those standards aren't a one-size-fits-all-all, so you have to further break things down into the category of eateries. So when I walk into a taqueria, my measurable standards will be a bit different from when I visit a Mexican theme, casual dining. For example, I treasure a great salsa bar in a taqueria that offers fresh variety and heated chips. Okay, I know that last one is a bit picky, but please have my back on this one. Aren't tortilla chips a whole other level of tasty when heated?

But great salsa bars can't hang their hats on hot chips alone. The salsa has as much to do with the experience. After all, salsa isn't just a condiment; it's a dance of flavors on your tongue. The ingredients must be fresh, the textures of salsa types must vary, and there has to be a variety of heat offered from mild to "my socks just blew off my feet with this ghost pepper salsa!". And let's not forget what I call "extra points items." I loved pickled food, so when I see pickled onions alongside a pickled medley of potatoes, garlic, and carrots, I sort of go nuts. But wait, there's one more item that's usually close to the salsa bar, which is a taqueria must for me. It's the fountain drinks. I kid you not, I am almost despondent with disappointment when I don't see a fountain drink machine in a taqueria. I like tons of ice in my diet soda (I won't name brands here because that starts a whole other discussion that deserves its own blog). I'll leave it at this. A fountain drink machine allows me to have a more than adequately carbonated drink to pair with my extremely spicy salsa selection. But back to the food. Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta has the best salsa bar (and I have seen many) and a fountain drink machine conveniently located right next to it.

The salsa bar's offerings are the best in class, with no doubt in my mind. There are two rows of six types of deliciousness in each row. The sauces and salsa in the front row are ordered from mild to hot in the front row. That includes a guacamole mix along with a sour cream based sauce. The back row starts with my favorite item, a.k.a. pickled onions that have just the right amount of lime to perk up all other senses and ends with a section dedicated to tiny containers of "dangerously hot" salsa. The great thing is you can't accidentally dip into those casually because they are in small, plastic-covered containers. The 11 items I sampled from the salsa bar were great, from mild to hot, chopped to creamy. I confess I didn't try the two "socks leaving feet" individually packaged salsa.

Feast for Now and One for Next Time

I want to give a fair warning and full disclosure right now. Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta is the kind of place that makes you crazy for more. I'm not kidding. The selection on the menu meets the same very high standard met by Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta salsa bar.

Everything you expect in a great Mexican restaurant (not just taqueria) is food here, plus a few things you wouldn't expect. I ordered the Pina Nieto, a cheese skirt taco with your choice of meat, served with an artfully sliced avocado and grilled pineapple. My husband ordered the Taco Governador, a fish (or shrimp) taco with in-house pickled cabbage, fresh cheese, and chipotle sauce. We were both delighted with our choice and even happier to see that the servings were large enough to take food home. But wait, this isn't even the part that will get you.

We both agreed that we had to come back sooner rather than later to try this thing called the Torre. In essence, this is a seafood tower made of different styles of shrimp, octopus, fresh and pickled onions, tomatoes, and avocado! In addition to all that fresh goodness, it's covered with sauces that look good enough to drink. We will feast on this the next time we visit Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta. There will be a next time for us, and I'm sure once you try Taqueria La Nueva Vallarta, there will also be one for you.
