A Local Favorite in Downtown Modesto
This past weekend, a few friends and I finally checked out Modesto on Ice in downtown Modesto and it was our first time going. The seasonal rink opens in late November, and honestly, it’s a fun way to get into the winter spirit without having to leave town.
A Fun, Family-Friendly Experience
We actually ended up going thanks to an Instagram ticket giveaway hosted by Modesto on Ice, which made it even more fun. I brought my wife and three close friends, and for most of us, it was our first time ice skating in years. Back in 2023, we visited the Fields of Ice rink in Turlock, so I had something to compare it to.
One thing that stood out right away was how family-focused the whole experience felt. There were tons of kids on the ice, parents cheering them on, and a really welcoming vibe overall. Kids three and under skate for free, which is a huge plus. My wife and I are already talking about bringing our daughter once she’s a little older.
Pricing That’s Easy on the Wallet
Since we won free tickets, pricing wasn’t top of mind but after looking it up, I was honestly a little surprised at how reasonable it was. It’s about the same as going to the movies or grabbing a casual dinner.
• Adults (13+): $19 per session
• Kids (3–12): $15 per session
They also offer family deals and multi-session passes, which would definitely make sense if you plan on going more than once during the season.
Skating for All Skill Levels
Our group had a pretty wide range of skating abilities. My wife was easily the strongest skater thanks to past experience, while others in our group stayed close to the rink walls and that seemed pretty common.
What I liked most was how comfortable it felt for everyone. Beginners, kids, parents, and confident skaters were all sharing the ice without it feeling chaotic. They also offer skating helpers (those PVC walker-style supports), which were being used a lot especially by younger kids.
Sessions, Space & Atmosphere

Modesto on Ice runs nine skating sessions per day starting at 10 a.m. We went to the 4 p.m. session, and while the rink can hold up to 160 skaters, there were only about 60 people out there when we went. It made the whole experience feel relaxed and not overcrowded.
I’m sure it gets busier during peak times, but during our visit, it felt well-organized and easygoing.
How It Compares to Turlock’s Fields of Ice

Both rinks are pretty similar in a lot of ways pricing, rink size (Turlock might be slightly bigger), and food options. Where Modesto on Ice really won me over was with the fire pits, food variety, and the large covered seating area that fits a good-sized group.
Fields of Ice in Turlock has its own charm too, especially with holiday touches like Santa days and the Christmas tree lot nearby. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either it just depends on what vibe you’re looking for.
Warming Up After Skating
After skating and definitely feeling it in our legs, we grabbed some hot chocolate and hung out by the fire pits. There’s also a snack shack with a solid variety of food, drinks, and even s’mores kits which felt like the perfect way to end the night.
Supporting Local Fun

Overall, we had a great time. It’s refreshing to see something like this bring people together downtown, especially during the colder months. We’ll definitely be back hopefully next year with our daughter once she’s ready to hit the ice.
If you’re in the Modesto area, Modesto on Ice is worth checking out. It’s an easy way to support local and make some winter memories.
