Have you ever wanted to step back in time to see what the 1960s or '70s felt like, while also enjoying a really solid brunch with your friends or family? Where vivid colors run wild and checkerboard tiles make you feel as if you were on the set of The Brady Bunch? If that sounds like your kind of morning, I've got the perfect spot for you and the best part is, it won’t break the bank!

Latif's By Pedretti is one of those places that feels like it's always been there, and for many people in Turlock, it basically has. It's more than just a restaurant; it's a local landmark and a nostalgia trip wrapped into one. From the second you walk in, you can tell this place has stories to tell.

Quick Details

Latif’s By Pedretti

If you haven't been there yet, you can find Latif's at 111 N Golden State Blvd here in Turlock, just a few steps from Central Park. Their menu is mainly focused on breakfast and brunch, and their hours reflect that. They are open Monday through Saturday at 6 a.m., Sunday at 7 a.m., and close at 2 p.m. every day except Friday, when they stay open until 8 p.m.

Over the years, Latif's has definitely seen its fair share of changes. The restaurant moved to its current location back in 1959 and more recently survived a kitchen fire during Super Bowl LV in 2021. After that fire, the doors stayed closed for a long 927 days, leaving many locals wondering if this iconic spot would ever reopen. Thankfully, it did. Latif's was purchased and brought back to life by new owner Nick Pedretti, and even with all the ups and downs, not much has really changed which is exactly how locals like it.

A Little History Goes a Long Way

The fire that happened on February 7, 2021, during Super Bowl LV is still a bit of a mystery. What isn't a mystery is how much love and effort went into restoring Latif's afterward. Nick Pedretti worked hard to save pieces of the restaurant's history, including photos of customers from the 1960s that you can see framed on the walls, some original menus from the '60s, and a handful of the original booths and chairs that survived the fire.

Two of those booth seats are especially meaningful to longtime locals because they hold U.S. historical significance. On the back of them are placards commemorating President George H.W. Bush's visit to Turlock in 1988. Yes, President Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush stopped at Latif's during their NorCal campaign through the Central Valley. It has been said that they came in and ordered “a bowl of chili, a chocolate shake, and apple pie,” according to the Turlock Journal. Knowing you're sitting where history happened, even in a small-town way, just makes the breakfast or brunch experience that much cooler.

The Food (AKA the Reason You'll Keep Coming Back)

Latif’s By Pedretti

Of course, history and nostalgia only get you so far the food still has to be good, and Latif's definitely delivers. The atmosphere and menu really do bring you back to a simpler time, when breakfast was hearty and nobody was counting carbs.

My wife and I shared the waffle breakfast combo, and wow… that waffle was excellent. The combo came with two eggs, sausages, and a side of hash browns. And let me just say they cook hash browns exactly how I like them: lightly salted with a whole lot of crispy. Honestly, my mouth is watering just thinking about them right now. Writing this is making me hungry, and I'm pretty sure I’ll be stopping by Latif's again sometime this month.

We've also tried the pancakes before, and they're a totally different experience from the waffles. The pancakes are super fluffy, buttery, and honestly almost too filling in the best way possible. They taste great, but I've been on a waffle kick lately, and Latif's waffle really hit the spot.

Overall Takeaway

If I had to rate it, I'd give the waffle a solid 9 out of 10. The only thing I would’ve changed is having two waffles instead of one… but let’s be real, that probably would've put me straight into a food coma.

At the end of the day, Latif's By Pedretti is the kind of place that reminds you why local spots matter. It's comfortable, affordable, full of history, and serves food that keeps you coming back. Whether you're a longtime Turlock local or just passing through, it’s definitely worth a visit!
