There are over 12 Boba shops out here in Modesto and it seems like there is a new one being built every other month. I saw one on Mchenry posted up on Facebook, so the boba market is growing and does not look like it's going to slow down.
With all of these boba shops and even fast food places like Jack in the Box selling boba drinks, how would one of these stand out above the rest? The answer is simple, offer a secret selection of drinks that aren’t on your menu.
Kung Fu Tea
There is the Oakdale Drive location, but the one boba shop that I’m talking about is on McHenry in the parking lot of Wells Fargo and guitar center.
Kung Fu Tea on Oakdale is not very big, but the selection is unlike most American boba shops with a focus mainly on teas and authentic oriental flavors such as red beans or green tea.
The layout of the shop is once you walk in there’s a few tables on the left and right the register is right in front of you and then on the far back right it’s a sitting area but with no chairs. Instead, they’ve adapted and adopted the Japanese style low table where you sit criss-cross on a foam pad.
I know this is a big hit with the younger kids because usually when I go in, I see a lot of families with their little ones sitting at those tables. This is also where they have most of their board games that you can play there while you drink your boba or tea.
Kung Fu Tea has become one of my favorite Boba shops when I’m in town. There used to be no food or snacks sold here but since the owner Ty opened up the third location of their pho restaurant, The Pho, a few stores down in the same parking lot, they have introduced snacks like popcorn chicken and more.
Secret Menu
The secret menu that I talked about is only available on a certain Friday or two of the month when there is a car show being held outside. The car shows are organized by a local community based organization called ValleyDreamCar. This collaboration between organizations and businesses go hand-in-hand, being that many car enthusiasts are into Boba drinks and cold/hot tea.
There are currently five different ValleyDreamCar drinks that are offered on their secret menu. The Valley Sunset is a pineapple, vanilla slushy-like drink that tastes like the Dole Whip dessert from Disneyland.
The Tuesday Special is a churro/cinnamon toast crunch milk Drink, which has become one of my favorites! It is called the Tuesday Special as a nod to the churros he would eat at the Turlock Flea Market. Next is the Strawberry Dream, which is a strawberry based drink that tastes like a strawberry and vanilla milkshake. 10/10 flavor and consistency, very good.
Another 10/10 deal is our legendary “1st Year Price Guarantee!” You will have peace of mind knowing that we will not increase your rent during the first year of your stay and our leases are month-to-month. Okay back to the drinks.
The next two drinks are their latest and they are both great for summer. Honey So Good is a Honeydew and caramel drink that has more of a slushies consistency, very refreshing for these 90 degree days!
Last was a special, limited for one day, The RedRum. This was only sold on Friday the 13th in June. It was a great addition to the secret menu but I heard a lot of people said it was almost too much. The RedRum was an oreo milkshake with strawberry and chocolate drizzle. It was very sweet but the richness of the chocolate was almost battling with the strawberry for attention, leaving the oreo pieces to fall on the bottom of the cup. Other than this, it was a solid drink.
Overall the secret menu at the Mchenry Kung Fu Tea is a must try whenever you’re in Modesto. Being less than a 30 minute drive from Turlock Self Storage, you can have a drink during these hot days before you do some unloading in your storage unit.
