Turlock’s Newest Gem: Where Antique Treasures and Crystals Collide

|

Modern Living Vintage and Moonchild Crystal Shop have come together here in Turlock and created a very unique combination for shoppers. By combining an antique store and a crystal shop for Turlock residents to shop at, they have introduced a new atmosphere for everyone to experience.

About The Owners

Anthony (of Modern Living) and Megan (of Moonchild) opened their joint store here in Turlock on Center Street back in February of this year. I saw pictures and posts on Instagram and it looked pretty cool online, but seeing it in person is a whole different experience.

There are many eye catching items such as vintage toys, furniture, clothes, and random trinkets. During my first visit, three things stood out the most.

Our 3 Takeaways

First, I walked around for a while trying to find some VHS for my personal collection and their selection was smaller than anticipated, but they had some good finds. If you’re looking for records on the other hand, there is a collection that takes up a whole room in the back of the store.

The whole back room is filled with records, some DVDs and some VHS, but mainly boxes upon boxes of records that fill up the room. If you’re a fan of records, definitely go check out that portion of the store! While the VHS collection was on the smaller side, the impressive record collection more than made up for it.

Next, if you’re like me and not too into records, the front of the store has a strong variety of toys, antique furniture and a good selection of clothes: mainly T-shirts from what I noticed. I’d say the pricing of the shirts are around $20-$30 which might seem high, but feels justifiable considering their vintage nature and rarity.

The shop has a ton of toys I remember from my own childhood, along with even older ones that my parents would probably recognize from back in the day. I’d say toys and comics make up about 60% of the store, which is really neat to see because it feels almost like a museum of pop culture. The main takeaway is that most of these toys are considered collectibles and unfortunately, means they come with collector-level price tags. Personally, I wouldn’t spend that much on a toy, but I can definitely see how someone else might.

Lastly, on the other side of the store, you’ll find the crystal shop portion which I knew my wife would be interested in checking out. There’s a large selection of incense, crystals and different rocks to choose from. If you don’t know what you’re looking for or what each crystal is meant for or is associated with, there are helpful posters above on the wall that go into detail what they are called and what they are from, which I thought was pretty helpful.

From Merced to Turlock

I chatted with the person behind the counter and learned that both shops originally came from Merced. The Moonchild Crystal shop wanted to move to Turlock, but the space was too large for her to handle solo. So, she reached out to a shop three doors down, Modern Living, and that’s how the two teamed up. The rest is history!

It was interesting to me that they both decided to branch out of Merced and open something here in Turlock. This is a great example that shows our downtown is growing and thriving and I can’t wait to see what else comes from it!

I think the store will do well here in Turlock as the thrifting and secondhand community is very supportive out here, especially downtown. After you’re done checking out the shop and picking up some cool finds, make sure you come over to Turlock Self Storage and pick out the one that best suits you and your new secondhand treasures!
