Savoury’s sammies are superior, so that's why you should try this place. Oh, wait, Savoury’s sweets are exceptional too! I guess that might be the best reason to try Savoury. Oh no! I forgot that the salads are also superior! Alright, say you’ll go there for the salads because, well, that just sounds so grown up.
Now I know that's a somewhat subjective claim. After all, what one person considers superior might be another person's above average. Trust me, whatever you try at Savoury is superior, and when you read on, you'll see why.
Food Art
Sammies (also known as sandwiches) are so many things when you break them down. In fact, to rise to the level of superior sammie, much thought has to be given to more than meets the taste buds. When this place says it has artisan sandwiches, there’s nothing spared to live up to that description, and it all starts with the bread. Savoury sandwich bread is a work of art. The decision on bread was tough for me. I can't resist an excellent ciabatta, so that's what I went with, but the look of the focaccia made the decision less than easy.
One bite in and I wasn't sorry I went with the ciabatta. This bread, while once thought of as a benign contender in the bread world, is not simple when you know what you’re doing. Savoury knows what it’s doing with their ciabatta. To be excellent, ciabatta needs to be flavorful, thinly crusty on the outside but substantially dense on the inside. But to be great, it has to be just the right proportion of both those characteristics. Too crusty on the outside, and it feels like a thick pretzel. To be dense on the inside, it loses its signature quality, which is to mildly soak up some of the sauce but not so much that it becomes a soppy mess. Savoury nails it!!! To test the ciabatta to its fullest, I ordered the turkey, bacon, and avocado, which made my eyes water with happiness. The oven roasted turkey was flavorful and juicy, the smoked bacon was sweet and salty, the housemade mayo was buttery, the lettuce was crisp and fresh, the tomato was juicy and loaded with ripeness, there was a generous amount of avocado that was seasoned beautifully and the Havarti cheese was rich in flavor with a texture that I can only describe as "getting along" with the rest of the sandwich. Here’s what I mean by that.
Havarti cheese is like the ciabatta of cheese. Its low-key description gives the impression that it’ll be a quiet, foundational part of the sandwich, and that's all. But good-quality Havarti is much more than a foundation; it's a support beam. Savoury’s owners, a delightful couple who take great pride in making everything the best it can be, choose high-quality ingredients so the Havarti cheese is smooth, sweet, and has just a tiny bit of a seasoned cheese flavor that holds its own against the other wonderful sandwich ingredients. All ingredients considered, and the way the sandwiches are built make for a superior sammie.
Show-Stopping Salads
To give credit where credit is due, Savoury does such an excellent job of creating sandwiches that it would be easy to stop right there with the Savoury talk. But I can't because Savoury salads are also way above your average salad. Again, it goes back to guaranteeing great grub by building it right from the start. Savoury salads are fresh with plenty of the ingredients you hope to find in a great salad. While I had zero room to fit in one more bite after my sandwich, I asked for a caprese salad to go (with dressing on the side so it would be great when I ate it later). I was thrilled with this salad. Like the sandwich, each ingredient was the best of its kind. The mozzarella was so fresh and smooth that I would have bet there were cheese forms in the kitchen somewhere. The grape tomatoes tasted freshly picked, bursting with the fresh flavor of tomatoes. I could inhale the wonderful basil smell as well as taste its lovely presence. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar also tasted like high-quality products. I caught a hint of olive flavor along with the deep, sweet richness of wonderful vinegar. My salad was so delicious that I recommend it if you're even a bit curious about what a great caprese salad tastes like. Please try it.
Did I mention that this place also has amazing sweets? Okay, here's a thing I've learned in my years as a café fan: quality over quantity wins. With a family-owned café like Savoury, there isn’t much room for subpar offerings. To keep people coming back in the way Savoury does, each category of offerings must be outstanding. For an independently owned café to rise to the occasion of greatness, it may have to offer a bit less variety so that everything it offers is the best. Savoury sweets are a great example of that. I visited for lunch, so it seemed that some of the most popular sweets were gone, but what was left certainly looked terrific, and I was told they had been baked early that morning. Note to self and to you: grab a sweet first, and then figure out what you're going to have for lunch or breakfast. No matter how you choose to approach it, whatever you eat at Savoury will be fresh, delicious, and memorable. I'm still thinking about that superior sammie!
