The Legacy of Porto’s Bakery

|

How it All Began

Rosa Porta was born in Cuba; she was surrounded by the sweet aromas of her mother’s baking. For young Rosa the kitchen was filled with the scents of cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla. Her mother baked recipes that were handed down through the generations of the family. Little did young Rosa know just how far baking her families’ recipes would take her.

From Cuba to the United States

Rosa and her husband Raul Sr petitioned to leave Cuba and eventually they emigrated to the United States. They ended up in California with just the clothes on their backs. Her and her husband had big dreams and because of their great work ethic they set out to make their new dreams come true in America. And fortunately for us at Chino Hills Self Storage there is a Porto’s close enough for us to enjoy.

The Legacy if Porto's Bakery

From Home to Storefront

Rosa began baking and selling out of their home, but quickly her fabulous cakes became quite famous and it a sort two years she was able to have a storefront on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, California. Together her and her husband worked several years to build their bakery business, even their three children would help after school and the weekends.

The Legacy if Porto's Bakery

From Parents to Children

The family bakery business grew so quickly and gained popularity throughout Southern California, so much that after graduating from college the three children took on more significant roles within the business and as Rosa and Raul’s family grew even their grandchildren eventually came into the business. And to this day the bakery is family owned and operated.

Rosa’s Legacy

Though Rosa Porto passed away in 2019, she was able to see her dream come to fruition. Her and her husband Raul along with her children and grandchildren worked hard and through their efforts and through their love for one another along with the families treasured recipes they were able to expand to several cities throughout Southern California and they continue to expand because very soon Porto’s Bakery will open at Downtown Disney. Rosa Porto’s dream and her legacy continues even after her passing.

Locations

Porto’s Bakery now has six locations, soon the Downtown Disney location will be added to the family making it lucky number seven. We at Chino Hills Sefl Storage visit the West Covina location quite often, but if you are not near West Covina, you may be close to one of these: Glendale, Burbank, Downey, Buena Park, and Northridge. And don’t’ forget to watch the grand opening at Downtown Disney. I hope I can be first in line on that special day.

Not Just Baked Goods

Along with Rosa’s famous baked goods, the bakery has evolved through the years from her signature cheese rolls, her famous potato balls and all her other sweet and savory pastries that helped make her dream come true, the bakery also added choice baked breads, signature sandwiches, beautiful cakes and an in-house specialty coffee shop that is simply to die for. Often, when I complete a busy but satisfying day working at Chino Hills Self Storage, I find myself headed to Porto’s bakery, for me it’s like I’m headed toward a vacation, and a sweet one at that.

Assorted Menu

Porto’s Bakery kept with tradition throughout the years, the recipes that were handed down through the generations of her family are responsible for the success of this beautiful bakery. Each location has been consistent in design and with menu choices. I will share a few of what is behind the lovely glass cases as well as delectable fresh breads just waiting to be wrapped up for you to take home.

Let’s start with my most favorite item on the menu, Rosa’s potato balls. These perfect little mashed potato meat balls with a perfect flaky crust on the outside, these are an absolute must, I encourage you to visit the nearest Porto’s Bakery for just these little balls, you will not be disappointed, and I guarantee you will be taking some home too.

Besides the potato balls they also have the very best empanadas, and perfect flaky meat pies that are fan favorites. But let’s move onto the baked goods that made Rosa famous.

Baked Goods

The most popular cheese roll has been with Rosa from day one, but we can’t forget all the other side kicks that also played a roll. Besides the assorted potato balls there is the famous Refugiado (guava and cheese strudel), the Ham Croquette, and another favorite of ours at Chino Hills Self Storage the Dulce De Leche Besito Cookie. We never leave there without bringing a dozen of these back to our office.

Beautiful Cakes

I would be remiss if I did not mention the cakes created by this wonderful bakery. You can order ahead for your special event, or you can get in line and pick one up from behind the beautiful colorful glass case. The most popular, Milk N Berries Cake Round, The Tiramisu Cake, the Persian Cake Round (popular for birthdays). But it doesn’t end with these. You must see the glass case to believe it, there is beauty in every one of the cakes.

Coffee Shop to Die for

You can order a simple but amazing organic Guatemalan drip coffee, or you can get fancy and order flavorful lattes, unique flavored smoothies, or my favorite, different flavored mojitos, or a simple freshly squeezed orange juice, or a perfectly brewed iced tea. They have a beautiful relaxing lounge where you can relax while sipping on your beverage of choice.

The Legacy if Porto's Bakery

I hope that you will have a chance to visit one of Rosa’s Porto’s. Her legacy continues through her families love for recipes that generated from ancestors that began in Galicia a region of Spain. A bakery that has become so famous that it took the number one spot on “Yelp’s Top 100 Places to eat in the United States. Rosa’s high standards continue to be carried on by her family, reflecting her mission “Baking memories for generations to come.”

Here at Chino Hills Self Storage, we also take part in helping our customers to build new memories as they store in preparation to move into a new home, apartment or business.
