I love asking family-owned store owners what they seem to be most known for. When I asked it as Hangtown Originals, the answer was a quick one: dreamcatchers. Being a person who lets curiosity be my guide, I was happy to make my way over to the area of the store where Dream Catchers are located. Here's what I learned.
A dreamcatcher (translating from asabikeshiinh, which means "spider") originates from the Ojibwe (also known as Chippewa) people. Because the Ojibwe people, like most Indigenous people, viewed dreams as energy that surrounds people as they sleep. This energy was perceived as coming in a good or bad form. Should a dream affect the sleeping person, it could result in an impact on the rest of the person's life. Dreamcatchers were created to prevent bad dreams from affecting the person while capturing the good dreams; the tribe’s women elders often designed dreamcatchers to control the energy that surrounded sleeping children. Despite the long history of interaction between Indigenous peoples and others, it wasn't until the early 1920s that people throughout North and South America began adopting dreamcatchers into their way of life. This era was marked by a growing interest in the psychology of dreams, with some people even beginning to see dreams as a glimpse into other realms of existence. Today, dreamcatchers remain a staple when practicing energy and spirit work.
