What makes a place fun to eat at? There are obvious factors such as cleanliness, food quality, service, price point, and location. Then there are the things you just can’t identify but feel once you’re in the experience. If you want to know what I’m describing, eat at Represa Grill in Old Folsom.

Make It Your Everyday Special Place

Once upon a time, in the town of Loomis, there lived a kid named Billy Hartzell (now known as Chef William Hartzell). He grew up and became a chef who now creates fantastic food that you'll consistently find at Represa Grill in Folsom or anywhere his food truck happens to be for the day. Many interesting, inspiring, and, well, magical events lead to the place where you'll find Hartzell cooking today. All of those are reflected in his excellent restaurant. To explain what I mean by that, let me share my recent experience at Represa Grill. Represa Grill advertises itself to be family and dog-friendly. We recently celebrated a family member's birthday party there. Our party's ages ranged from two to 89 years old, and there were sixteen of us. Our reservations were for ten, but a few people who weren't originally counted showed up. No problem. Our waitress seated us together and managed our party's orders as if it was no big deal. We even asked if we could split the bill, and she said it wouldn't be a problem at all. Seated at the bar not far from us was someone who had her very well-behaved dog with her. The dog didn't appear to be a service dog but certainly spoke to the promise of Represa Grill being dog-friendly.

Represa Grill promises to be a place that blends excitement with relaxation, and that promise is kept, according to everyone I've talked to who loves this place. For some, it's their "special place for celebrations." For others, it's that place you go to when you want to hang out and have great food with other regulars. Because it’s situated in the Old Folsom Hotel, it has an intimate, cozy feeling resulting from the original architectural details that have been beautifully preserved. But there's also an exciting feel from the pops of contemporary touches in the music, drink selection, and a menu that is inventive yet loyal to old favorites. As you may have guessed from the name, there's also a huge wink to the Folsom Dam, the iconic Johnny Cash.

Culinary Thrills

Represa Grill's menu is where comfort food meets culinary thrills. From appetizers that make you wish they were your main meal to seasonal dishes that represent the best of our local area, you will be satisfied when eating at Represa Grill. I'd heard all about the famous fried brussels from others who had dined here, so of course, that was a must for us. I'm glad I went with that recommendation because these "brussels" were golden and crunchy on the outside, soft and subtle on the inside, and drizzled with vinegar, oil, and cheese covering that must be tasted to be appreciated. I all but licked the plate; thank goodness we were in public, or I might have done that. We also ordered fried cauliflower bites. Arriving with two kinds of creamy sauce that were far from your average dipping sauce, these little guys were fried in a crunchy, light crust. There were other appetizers to choose from, but based on the entrees I saw go by, I knew this was a place you want to leave plenty of room for the main event of the meal. Great instinct on my part! I had the Black Goat salad which had arugula greens, tart but not too tart goat cheese, blackberries, red onion, almonds, and a similar balsamic vinaigrette that came with the brussels. In addition to it being DELICIOUS, it was well constructed. The arugula leaves were not so huge that they needed to be fought to eat, the almonds were shaved so they didn't overpower, and the red onion was sliced very thinly, so it was subtle but added just that right amount of interest. For those wanting to add protein, there’s plenty to choose from at a very reasonable price.

Everything I saw going by or eaten at our table looked wonderful, and I was told I was top of the class. One fun section is a thing called Mac Bowls. You get to build your own creation that starts with a creamy version of mac and cheese and can end with toppings like fried chicken, crab, pork belly burnt ends, steak, and bacon. If that isn't enough, you can have it served in a bread bowl! Yes, mac and cheese served in a bread bowl, the ultimate comfort food.

Burgers and More

Several people in our party split a burger and sides plate and didn't leave hungry. The beef is short-rib, Angus, with each topping creatively prepared in how it's added or mixed. Each burger has a combination of elements that have been curated for a culinary treat. My husband had The Dam Blues, which combined a generous amount of high-quality blue cheese with fresh greens and a balsamic aioli sauce on a crispy and soft bun. I want to say that the bun appeared substantial enough to hold the generous portions of the burger's ingredients! If burgers aren't your thing, you can have buttermilk fried chicken or its spicy version. Someone in our party ordered the "Rollin with my Crabbies" lump crab rolls. We all were happy because all our choices were GREAT! We didn't get to sit at it this time, but we’ll be back and might start (or end) the evening there. There's a massive representation of local beer and wine and a fun selection of mixed drinks. But there's more! Throughout the month, live music events are happening on the old-fashioned raised stage, adding a perfect element to the restaurant's excellent offerings. Whether it becomes your go-to place for special occasions or your first choice for dropping in, I’m sure you'll love Represa Grill, so get there soon.
