Sol Agave (Mexican Restaurant)

If you have been to Los Angeles, you would know that there is a plethora of restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. to check out. It will probably take you years to eat at every single restaurant there is in Los Angeles! There are so many different cuisines to try – Los Angeles really is a melting pot of cultures. And I could not be more proud of that. Although, you can't call yourself a true Californian or maybe a Southern Californian if you haven't developed a love for Mexican Food.

Sol Agave and The Broad

I was seeing an uptick of posts on social media about Sol Agave. Naturally, I had to go and see what the hype was about! I was surprised to learn that Sol Agave actually has 7 different locations (5 in California and 2 in Utah) and that this successful restaurant that is now a mini-chain had its humble beginnings. They started as a food truck and believed that Mexican food should be “More complex, modern, enjoyable and healthier for our bodies”.

You know a Mexican restaurant is good when they come out with free tortilla chips and dip. Not just salsa but also a bean dip with chorizo! The ambiance in the restaurant was very nice and appealing. It was quite crowded for a weekday lunch as well.

They had a huge selection of food on the menu, everything sounded so good, it was hard to decide! For appetizer, we opted for the Sugar Cane Filet. It is center cut tenderloin medallions marinated with orange chipotle sauce served over white rice, topped with mango and tamarindo glaze. The mix of sweet, tangy, and soft filet was just *chef’s kiss*. It was a great combo. This was considered an appetizer but it's a hefty meal for one!

For entrée, we opted for their "Famous Carnitas". It was the Chef's "famous" all-natural braised pork. Served with rice, refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, salsa cruda, and your choice of tortillas. This meal could probably feed 2-3 people with the amount of meat it had! The pork was tender and juicy. It had the right amount of fats that elevated each bite of meat you took.

The Broad Museum

After having an awesome lunch, we had to find where to walk around to let the food go down and not have a food coma. We saw that The Broad is free so that was the perfect choice! The last time I visited the Broad was a couple of years ago so I was excited to visit again.

I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest art enthusiast so I wondered how people spent more than 1 hour in smaller museums. I took the time to read the stories behind pieces that interested me and it was really cool to learn how that piece came about and the inspiration behind it.

Some pieces were very interesting and I was joking, saying “I can make something like that”. After a while, we learned to just take our time and asked ourselves “what do you think was the point of this piece?” or “what is this piece trying to convey?”. This museum was fairly small so we got through all the pieces pretty quickly.

I sat down in front of this piece and was trying to make it out of the maze in my head as a game. It wasn't until I stepped away and saw that it actually spelled “America”! I was amazed that I didn't see that when I was up close.

All in all, walking around this museum and looking at their art installments was entertaining. To see the different art styles and pop culture. There's also a separate installment from the main art gallery called Infinity Mirror. This installation is mirror-lined with flashing LED lights. This is that one room where everyone has photos with for their Instagram.
