Enishi Kitchen - Chinese/Japanese Fusion Done Right

|

We are Cypress Self Storage, Oakley's newest self storage facility (currently under construction). We know just how many calories can be burned during a long day of moving and self storage. We are here to make your life just a little bit easier. (Our easy to access drive-up units and cool, climate controlled units are sure to make the self storage process more fun too!) After (or during) a long day of self storage, we know how important it is to find the restaurant to replish your energy levels. A continuation of our restaurant review series (don't forget to check out our reivews of HD Burgers & More and Pho Le), we are thrilled to review the Brentwood dining treasure that is Enishi Kitchen!

One of the latest Asian fusion restaurants to open in the Delta area is Enishi Kitchen, which specializes in Japanese and Chinese cuisine. As with all fusion restaurants, one has to wonder if they can do justice by both/all cuisines. But many do it, and Enishi is one of them.

On their Facebook page, it is mentioned that Enishi is a Japanese word meaning "serendipity", which is defined as "the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way." I'm pretty sure the events that created this restaurant didn't exactly happen by accident (if it did, that's pretty impressive!), but the happy and beneficial part is definitely accurate.

When we first started hearing the buzz about Enishi Kitchen late last year, we tried to check it out, but the place was jam-packed to the gills, the waiting list was quite long. When this happens, sometimes one isn't sure whether the restaurant is just insanely popular or insanely disorganized. So we decided to wait a little while until things calmed down.

When we finally made it back, we understood what all the fuss was about, and that the crowds when it first opened were due to the word of mouth reviews that quickly spread around town. It's the curse and benefit of living in a small town. We were seated immediately. While the place was still buzzing, it wasn't so noisy that we couldn't talk.

Service was very expedient, but not annoyingly so (like those places where waitstaff practically hover over your table waiting for you to finish so they can turn the table over to the next customer).

We tried the honey walnut prawns and chicken with yellow curry from the Chinese menu, and the Rainbow Roll and hamachi nigiri from the Japanese menu. (Note that there is a huge variety of specialty rolls that feature various combinations of raw and cooked fish of a range of spiciness and topped with various sauces.)

They were all really good. The prawns were juicy and fried to perfection, and the sauce not overly sticky sweet like some honey walnut prawns can be. The chicken with yellow curry was tender and not overwhelming. The sushi was presented beautifully, and all of the raw fish featured on the roll was fresh and tasty. The hamachi (yellowtail) was especially buttery. The rolls were decently-sized, dense enough to not fall apart when picked up. There is also the option of low-sodium soy sauce at the table.

Although we didn't try any at this particular outing, Enishi offers a pretty decent wine list, including a wide variety of red and white wines, premium sake and hot sake, and domestic and imported beer. Non-alcoholic beverages include sodas, iced tea, and marble soda.

I tried take-out a few weeks later and tried the lobster sauce prawns. My food was ready a little later than I was told, but well worth the wait. My food was still piping hot by the time I got home, and was chock full of large prawns, snow peas and water chestnut slices.

Another aspect that impressed me is the attentiveness of the owner. If you check out the Yelp reviews, he apologizes for any bad experience customers may have had, and is very appreciative of positive feedback.

So when you're in the mood for fabulous Japanese and/or Chinese food, definitely give them a try. We are so thrilled with this amazing, new restaurant in our local community, a true gem.
