When you crave a really good burger, and you're pretty new to the area, or are just tired of the same old places, what do you do? In this century, you ask your social media group, naturally. It makes you forget how we used to get opinions on things last century. Recently, one person did just that on my local Facebook page, and there was such a huge response! Besides the usual chains and other places we've been to dozens of times, there was one place that it seemed every other person raved about - HD Burger & More in Antioch, which opened in January 2017. I looked it up on Yelp, and many other people seemed to echo the sentiments (as of this writing, it rates at 4 and 1/2 stars). So I had to try it.
I was not disappointed. There is a large variety of burgers you can get, from the standard HD Burger to the Smoked Brisket Burger to the Lamb and Quinoa Burgers. No matter what you decide to get, the burgers are huge and flavorful and piled high with fresh and unique (in a good way!) toppings.
However, I would have to say that the crown jewel of the joint is the Candy Bacon Burger. This is a certified Angus Beef® Patty featuring thick, chewy pieces of applewood bacon, just the right balance of sweet and smoky. Other toppings include grilled red onions, lettuce, tomato, honey dijon sauce, cheddar cheese, and apple slices. I was so full after 3/4 of the burger but didn't want to stop eating for fear that this was all a wonderful dream from which I would awaken.
If you just want the applewood bacon on the side, you can get that, along with a plethora of other burger add ons, including poutine fries (ask your Canadian friends or look it up), sweet potato fries, honey sriracha fries, chili cheese fries, and other fries. There is also a side salad, chili, and HD's natural potato chips.
If you're not in the mood for a burger, or looking for slightly healthier fare, there is also a wide variety of sandwiches. These include tri-tip, salmon, portabella with brie, a number of types of chicken, and BLT. There are also salads, including, Greek, classic Caesar, salmon, and again, a variety of salads with chicken.
And no burger place would be complete without...milkshakes! And of course, HD offers much more than the standard chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. There's banana, caramel, coffee, and more. Other dessert fare includes cookies and deep-fried Twinkies, the latter with dark chocolate and powdered sugar.
There's a limited but adequate selection of adult beverages and soft drinks. The atmosphere is typical fast food diner, casual but clean, but not sterile-clean. Service isn't lightening fast but you don't want it to be. The place has a nice family feel to it.
If you're wondering where the name comes from, it was simply a marketing ploy (because HD is everywhere), but it also happens to be the initials of the owners' first names.
