We must have passed this building several times. Rising from the center of south Pasadena like a black sleek monolith. Stylish and bold with a simple sign saying “Art Center”. Our curiosity peaked, we wanted to know what was held within and boy did we find treasures untold!
Students from all over the globe flock here to learn to create the world of tomorrow. Art is all around us. It’s not just paintings and sculpture. It’s the architecture of the building we were in; it’s the stylish clothes you wear, and even the curves of the car you drive. Even a simple water bottle needs to be designed. All round you, we should ask; Who is this for? What are they trying to communicate to us? and why. Everything in the world we have created must be designed. This is where Art Center shines.
A Legacy of Creativity in Pasadena
The Art Center school of design has had a long running history in Pasadena as one of the world’s premier art schools. Art center was founded in 1930 in downtown Los Angles with a focus on traditional arts such as fine art and sculpture. They later extended their campus to Pasadena in 1976 to meet the ever-growing demand for television and film production. Today they also dominate in industrial design and digital arts making sure they are always ahead of the curve.
The Art center staff were gracious enough to let us look around and we were captivated by the talent on display. One floor we found package designs for what could be a hip new dessert shop in little Tokyo. Its bright yellow box called us from across the room, asking us to ask “Where did you get that!?”
On another floor we saw a vibrant mural of movable pieces depicting the fantastical tall tales of the west. A strong and determined cowgirl trying to wrangle the quick and elusive jackalope. The energy of the bold colors and strong linework made it feel as if they were ready to jump off the walls themselves.
Designing the Future
Our last stop was in another building tucked away from public view. Inside housed several sleek and modern designs of possible cars of the future. Every curve examined and scrutinized for maximal performance. We would have loved to have stayed longer but duty called.
When we returned to the office, we were so inspired that we just had to create something ourselves! Take a look! We call it “Arroyo: Safe and Sound!” We hope it makes everyone feel inspired to store with us for all your needs!
