Having a go-to spot for date night, hanging out with friends, or grabbing some drinks and food with workmates is great. Auburn Alehouse, located just a 15-minute drive from Rocklin, is one such place that ticks all the boxes and more. This unique establishment boasts delicious food, top-notch local brews, and a famous building with a rich history. The building has been a restaurant for over a century, and it was once home to California's oldest restaurant and liquor license operating continuously in the same location. Additionally, the building was used as a filming location for the Hollywood movie Phenomenon, making it a must-visit for film buffs.
From Turn of the Century to Phenomenon
Old Town Auburn has a rich history, and Auburn Alehouse is located in a building that has been a restaurant for over a century. The Shanghai Restaurant and Bar, which opened in 1896, was a beloved fixture in Auburn known for its great food and warm hospitality. Anyone who lived in Auburn during the Shanghai Restaurant and Bar era has a story to share. The building also has the distinction of once housing California's oldest restaurant and liquor license operating continuously in the same location. Moreover, Old Town Auburn hosted John Travolta, Kyra Sedgwick, Robert Duvall, and Forest Whitaker during the production of the movie Phenomenon in 1995. The area was transformed into a Hollywood-style film set, with the Shanghai Bar and Grill at center stage. A visit to Old Town Auburn is worth it to see references to that magical time and to try the delicious food at Auburn Alehouse.
Really Cold, Really Hot, and Really Great
Auburn Alehouse is definitely a place worth visiting, not just for its award-winning craft beers, but also for its delicious food. I have heard nothing but great things about their cold beer, which is served to perfection, and their food is equally impressive. The Cheese Loaf appetizer is a must-try - a six-inch sourdough loaf stuffed with artisan cheese, garlic, and butter, served with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Alehouse Burger is also a popular menu item, featuring a choice Angus patty topped with cheddar cheese, fresh greens, and bacon, and served on a brioche bun. The Oyster Po'Boy, with its cornmeal-crusted oysters and not-too-spicy Cajun spread, is another crowd-pleaser.
Now I don't want to lead anyone astray, but I hope that there are some of you who will join me in the “dessert first” tradition. Going for the lemon cheesecake, which is cheesecake topped with lemon curd or the chocolate stout brownie will start any meal off in the right direction. If I haven’t already convinced you of the wonderfulness you're going to experience at Auburn Alehouse, let me throw these two things in. Auburn Alehouse has a great brunch menu, a sizable kids menu, and a full bar with cocktails and wine that rise to the same level of amazingness that the beer holds. Oh, and one final thing, the fantastic ambiance and wonderful service make the experience even more enjoyable. In fact, Auburn Alehouse is so popular that it had to expand to a location right across the street called "The Annex". It's easy to see why this place continues to uphold the tradition of Old Town Auburn's greatness.
