Compassionate Planet’s signature program was a mentoring initiative where trainees ages 18-24) engaged in up to 3200 hours of structured job training that including coaching and life skills development. As a Compassionate Planet shop, Deer Creek Farm offers trainees experience in retail boutique, home-staging and even a bit of dabbling in the garden market niche. What’s really neat is after the initial program, trainees graduate and can enter into a lifelong “Aftercare” network of alumni events, resources and encouragement-activities to continue building their independence. This program greatly emphasizes community connection as a life-long path of growth. The shop’s mission is as beautiful as the merchandise it sells. Each time I shop at Deer Creek Farm, I am instantly humbled by how one person’s commitment can change so many lives. Since it’s beginnings in 2012, Compassionate Planet has helped youth and young adults find a secure path to adulthood success. There are two stories often highlighted by young people whose lives were changed with Compassionate Planet’s impact. One is of a young woman named Kaydee. Like many helped by the organization, Kaydee had no safety net and was facing a tough stretch in her life. She had left high school and couldn’t get a job. To quote her bio, “I was beginning to lose hope”. Deer Creek Farm became a place of belonging for her where she found a supportive job and community of people who understood the challenges facing people like Kaydee.
Another person whose story is highlighted at Deer Creek Farm is Jahmar . As one of nine siblings moving through the foster-care system, he was challenged in gaining basic life skills. But his own resilience led him to Deer Creek Farm and he thrived there. First he attended the resume workshop which led to employment. He also gained the skills needed to understand opening a banking account, shopping and managing a budget. Through his sense of belonging with the Compassionate Planet community, he thrived and all this led to accepting a football scholarship at Southeastern Louisiana University! In his bio, he says, “The people at Compassionate Planet taught me how to be better prepared for life.”
