One of the best things about Rocklin is its commitment to family friendly activities. As I've mentioned before in a previous blog post about Johnson-Springview Park, one of the measurements of a healthy town or city is its recreational parks. These spaces offer a place for people to be active and participate in activities that promote health. An excellent example of that is the upcoming 2019 Healthy Kids Running Series. This is one of those activities that I can see becoming the thing that you and the kiddos do every spring to kick off your outdoor recreation season. But why running, you might be asking? Well, here's what the research shows about the benefits of running for kids of all ages.
Running for Life-Long Wellness
We've all seen the studies that have given explained the benefits for running. Running can be a great habit for anyone who can do it (safely of course). Well, the same is true for kids as it is for adults. Studies about the benefit of running for kids indicate that kids who run: have stronger muscles and bones, are less likely to become overweight, decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, possibly have lower blood pressure, have potentially lower blood cholesterol levels and have a leaner body from burned body fat. There are also many benefits that contribute to a child's mental wellness and self-esteem. Running teaches kids that self-motivation and hard work achieve success and this is true in the reverse as well. Success makes children motivated to achieve so it starts a positive cycle early in life. Running also teaches kids to respect themselves because they feel the benefits of being physically active and challenging their bodies. Running can help build a foundation for commitment to maintaining exercise to have fun and stay well. Running is an excellent activity because it allows kids to set a goal for themselves and have an activity that isn't dependent on others to do.
The Long Run
Healthy Kids Running Series was the brain child of Jeff Long, the Founder and President of Pattison Sports Group. Long's goal for Healthy Kids Running Series was to address the increasing rates of childhood obesity in America. By designing a program that makes running fun, Long believed the program would help kids learn a "get up and go" attitude. Since it's start in 2009, the Healthy Kids Running Series, a non-profit community-based program, has been running successfully! Each year, the program gains ground in new communities (at last count, there was 230 communities across the nation), increases its number of volunteers and sponsors and is an event that is here to stay. This exciting, fun-filled program is something everyone in the family, and community, can participate in. One of the secrets to the success of Healthy Kids Running Series is radical inclusiveness. What do I mean by that? Read on to see for yourself.
Everyone is Welcomed to the Run Fun!
No one is left out of the fun with Healthy Kids Running Series. There are several age categories for kids. Two and three-year-old kids run a 50-yard dash, four and five-year-old kids run a 75-yard dash, kindergarteners and first graders run a 1/4 mile, second and third graders run a 1/2 of a mile, fourth and fifth graders run a mile, sixth through eighth graders run a mile. Registration is going on right now for the run series starting on Sunday March 24th, skipping Easter Sunday and ends on Sunday April 28th.
Get Ready, Get Set, Start!
You don't have to be a kid to get involved in all this fun. Healthy Kids Running Series is made successful because of the hard work of volunteers and coordinators. If you'd like to get involved in a fun, time-limited cause, this is the one for you. If you can't volunteer and prefer to be a sponsor, that's very appreciated as well. If you're a runner, parent of a child participating in Healthy Kids Running Series, help with coordination or volunteer at the event, Healthy Kids Running Series invites you to share how running has had a positive impact on your life.
