I once heard the idea that adventure in life is good, but consistency in coffee is even better. I think the two go hand in hand — because the best adventures are the ones that end with a consistently great cup of coffee. While out on one of my curiosity-led adventures, I did decided to try a coffee house that’s new to the Rocklin community-it’s Placer Roasting Company AND its my new favorite hangout! Placer Roasting Company is a place that truly lives up to its commitment to providing a high-quality product in an exceptionally comfortable setting. What a place! Do yourself and everyone you care about a favor by checking out Placer Roasting Company! Read on to see what I think makes this place special.
New Coffee Shop Locally Owned and Committed to the Locals
There’s a vibe that comes across when you enter a place owned and run by locals. Everything comes together from choice in decorating to the feels you get interacting with those that work in the place. Placer Roasting Company is family-owned by Shawn & Katie Clouse. Here’s what’s really fun about Placer Roasting Company, it’s passion-driven by a guy, Shawn, who comes from a background of home-roasting and he's nuts about exploring coffee flavors. He lives and breathes excellent coffee! So everything about the process practiced at Placer Roasting Company comes from going beyond making a good coffee. He has total control over every aspect of what builds that coffee experience.
Visiting Placer Roasting Company is like visiting a very exclusive winery's tasting room. Okay, hear me out! What I mean by that is that, except for growing the beans in the café's back lot, everything about that coffee happens right there! The Clouses have made sure that their valued customers (or soon-to-be friends) are greeted warmly and have all their questions answered. They're invited to see the roasting process and taste before buying. In fact, they refer to Placer Roasting Company as a coffee house and tasting room. It’s so much fun and very next-level for those of us who are also passionate about our coffee. Okay, maybe not passionate enough to open our own café, but certainly passionate enough to celebrate that someone has opened a place like Placer Roasting Company right in our own backyard.

Specialty Coffee in Rocklin That’s Bean to Cup Immersion
I admit, I was almost overwhelmed with gratitude for the time I got to spend at Placer Roasting Company. I say that because it felt so complete. I loved seeing the bean roasting (more about that in a second). I loved that in response to my blurting out, “WOW, this place is so cool!” I got a round of "hey, welcome in!" The welcoming spirit is brewed bold at Placer Roasting Company (did you happen to see that one coming?). Anyways, puns aside for now, the coffee here is amazing. Let me tell you why.
Like real estate, excellent coffee is about location, location, location. No, really, it is. You see, being a single-origin coffee sourcing place, Placer Roasting Company that beans are ethically-sourced with tons of attention to every detail of the flavor they will produce. Clouse says that he wants to know the farm and regions the beans come from. He insists on full traceability. He also places importance on "fairly traded" beans. As a local business owner, that's consistent with being respectful of everyone in that same situation within the coffee chain he deals with. Fair trade helps everyone in the chain to have economic stability and a predictable income. Farmers get to invest in better practices and buyers such as the Clouses know they are supporting the success of others.
The next ingredient added to the secret of greatness you'll find at Placer Roasting Company is in the bean roasting process. Because beans are roasted in tiny batches, the roaster maintains careful control of every variable of the process. That means the proper temperature curve is maintained, the drum speed is optimum, airflow is always adequate, and each roast's developmental phase is timed perfectly. This amounts to the fact that the roaster can bring out the best possible profile for each specific bean. Okay, so this is where coffee nuts allow their inner geeks to flow freely. This means more fruitiness with this, but tone down the sweetness. Or bring on the chocolate, but make sure bitter is nowhere in the picture. It's a dialing in that's so specific that a place becomes known for that type of coffee profile. And the best part is that you can have that conversation with the knowledgeable people who work at Placer Roasting Company. They can explain everything and seem happy to do it.
Cozy Café Spaces That Invite All
The great things about Placer Roasting Company aren't limited to their coffee and other treats. The space created for customers to enjoy is as well curated as the coffee beans themselves. The first thing you notice is that it's a full-on nod to the local area. The décor and names used are from the local heritage, primarily the Gold Country and its mines. Drink blends are named after nearby mines, and the brew-colored landscape mural looks like what you’ll see just a short drive up I-80. Using the name Placer in the coffee house’s name directly relates to Placer County and the placer gold found during the California Gold Rush. And talk about clever! Here's something I thought of when sitting at Placer Roasting Company enjoying my coffee, by using a word associated with mining, it feels like finding Placer Roasting Company is like striking it rich with gold! Now I didn’t ask that of anyone to be sure that’s why the name was chosen, but for me, the symbolism and connection work well.
And speaking of inviting everyone, I started a conversation with a mom who was enjoying treats with her young son. The reason she was able to do so and be really relaxed while doing it is that she was seated in the middle of a comfortable area designated for young visitors. Without disturbing the flow of the rest of the space, the children's play area provided a welcoming area for little ones to get some hand’s on playing and allowed for people like the mom I met, to relax. I asked this mom-customer what she liked about Placer Roasting Company and she didn’t hesitate to say, “the coffee is great but what does it just as much for me is that my friends and I can sit and enjoy coffee while our kids enjoy playing indoors.” She added that it was the perfect blend of a grown-up experience designed to include kids. It sure looked that way to me. In fact, the two of us sat and talked for over forty-five minutes on that rainy day that brought me to my new favorite coffeehouse. I could say so much more about what I love about Placer Roasting Company, because there's so much to love about this place. I recommend you discover your own nugget of joy by visiting Placer Roasting Company as soon as you can.
