Roots That Feed Today’s Success
No one can argue that Placer County is a great wine and brew-tasting place. One reason is that the region lends itself to growing such a variety of ingredients, from grapes and hops to honey and apples. Placer County’s growing climate is amazing. Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. takes full advantage of the area’s bounty for brewing by offering a robust variety of mead to its ever-changing menu. But before I dive into mead, let me paint you a picture of what you’ll find at Dueling Dogs Brewing Co.
Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. is a family-owned and run business located outside of Lincoln. Sharing 10 acres with the family home are two acres of Satsuma Mandarin Oranges, an acre of hops, a beautiful pond, and a garden. The brewery and winery are also located on the family’s farm. Visiting Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. feels like visiting the home of family and friends. Everything is situated with attention to safety and comfort, from parking to tasting room access. When you park your car, you can feel the “this is where family-friendly fun is happening” vibe. Dogs Brewing Co. lives up to its reputation for making everyone feel welcome, including kids and dogs. It’s no wonder this place is so popular. I’m telling you, Dogs Brewing Co. is a local family-made good kind of story. I know this because one of the owners, Earl Stevens, was born and raised in Lincoln and was in my graduating class of 1980! Sorry to Earl for disclosing our age. Growing up, Earl was known for his passion for agriculture, open-hearted nature, and integrity. His family was respected in the community, and those roots appear to be a big reason for the success of the Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. recipe. Another part of the successful recipe comes from the other owner’s passion for creating mead. This falls under the other owner of Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. passion, Adriana Stevens, who is a mead whisperer. Read on to find out more about mead and more.
No Mead to Whisper
Okay, as puns go, I chose that one but could have gone with much lower-hanging fruit such as “mead for speed” or “a friend is mead is a friend indeed.” And speaking of not whispering, speed, and friends, visit Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. on any Friday night and prepare to play a version of trivial pursuit that’s friendly, challenging, and, yes, I’ll say it, humbling. I left with a firm resolve to brush up on everything. While that plan may not come to fruition in my world, what has come to fruition at Dueling Dogs Brewing Co. is some incredible mead.
Mead is sometimes known as honey wine but exists in its own category of alcoholic beverages. Even though meads are flavored with fruit, they aren’t considered wine. In fact, some historians believe that mead predates both beer and wine. One of the things I learned that’s fascinating (and could lead to a great trivia question) is that mead’s flavor varies greatly based on the diet of honeybees. Honey collected from an orange grove will differ from that collected from a blackberry patch. Adriana has raised the bar with her meads by adding seasonal crops. Mead, I say more?
