Sometimes nothing will hit the spot, but a great sandwich paired with an ice cold beverage and topped off with a delicious cookie. If you live or work in the Roseville community, you’re in luck because Erik’s DeliCafe is right around the corner. Now the quality of food speaks for itself but in case you need to have a bit more information to convince you that this place has something special going on, check out the places it’s remained a big success.
Scotts Valley and Beyond
Erik’s DeliCafe opened its first location in 1973. The story is rather comical because it has a great ending. Erik Johnson, an accountant by trade, decided he wanted to shift career tracks and open his own business. After making unsuccessful bids an ice cream shop, a donut shop and a health food store (I kid you not, I can’t make this stuff up) Johnson finally won a bid on a 600 square foot location in Scotts Valley. The following year, he took over the space of a neighboring TV store and business boomed.
With the expansion of the first Erik’s in Scotts Valley, opened a second location in Capitola followed with Erik’s DeliCafé of Aptos. Then came a location in Santa Cruz and before long, opening a location outside of the County. Erik’s DeliCafé of Los Gatos. Note that these locations cater to a high-end demographic, so Erik’s DeliCafe had to work hard to compete in a tough market. The next level of growth was for Erik’s DeliCafe to move to other counties, which it did and again hit it out of the park. So with that location line up, it’s no surprise that Erik’s DeliCafe would choose to locate itself in the thriving community of Roseville. Read on to learn what makes Erik’s DeliCafe such a hit.
The Best and Nothing But the Best
The thing that makes Erik’s DeliCafe consistently stand out is that nothing but the best is served here. Starting with the basics, Erik’s DeliCafe gives priority to partnering with local farms and suppliers so that all ingredients are fresh. This includes the meat and ingredients used to bake artisan bread daily. Soups are prepared with the same high quality ingredients using family recipes handed down through generations. Sandwiches are not just delicious because of the high-quality ingredients used to build them; they are also famous for their unique flavor combinations. Gluten free bread options are also offered on all sandwiches at no extra charge.
Now I know it isn’t often that you use “dietician endorsed” and delicatessen in the same sentence, but in the case of Erik’s DeliCafe, it is absolutely used often. In fact, Erik’s DeliCafe makes specific sandwiches based on dietician recommendations such as the Raging Bull and the REO Speedwagon sandwiches. More items on the dietician recommended menu include the Texas Jailhouse chili and the Chicken Gorgonzola Salad.
Fun is an essential ingredient in the recipe for success at Erik’s DeliCafe. The atmosphere is lively and each menu item is named to bring a smile to your face (and an ahhhhh to your stomach). For example, there’s the Gaucho Grinder which is tender seasoned beef, fresh mozzarella cheese, crispy (and I mean perfectly crisp crispy) fried onions, fresh tomatoes, and the perfect finishing touch of fresh clover sprouts. This is served on a freshly baked Dutch crunch roll and topped with a generous dollop of secret goo and chimichurri sauce. Now you may want to know what secret goo is. Well, it’s a Erik’s DeliCafe exclusive sauce with the best guesses of the recipe to include mayonnaise, sour cream, some designer mustard and maybe hints of garlic and onion powders but maybe not? No one really knows the recipe (outside of the Erik’s DeliCafe inner circle, of course) but everyone who tries it falls in love with it.
Other fun sandwich names include the Sweet Liberty, Da Club, Rio Grande, Pot Belly, Abbott’s Habit, Raging Bull and the Sea Dog. There are also a bunch of great vegetarian versions of these sandwiches.
It Doesn’t End with Mouth Watering Sandwiches
In addition to sandwiches, Erik’s DeliCafe has a line up of soup that makes choosing one an almost impossible task. From butternut squash to New England Clam chowder, all soups are freshly made with the same attention to fresh ingredients that go into salads and sandwiches. Of course, you can’t talk about Erik’s DeliCafe without giving honorable mention to the desserts. In fact, it’s a good idea to either take half your meal home or split it with a companion so you have room for dessert. Why? Carrot cake.
As I’ve confessed a time or two, my ultimate favorite dessert of all times is carrot cake. I base a restaurant’s merit on how serious they take their carrot cake and how much effort they put into making it stand out above all others in its class. Well, I can say with pretty no hesitation that Erik’s DeliCafe has a carrot cake that’s worth waiting for. Hey, in fact, it’s so good it’s worth eating it as an appetizer so you have plenty of room in your stomach to really enjoy this special dessert. This mouth-watering version of my favorite dessert is called Grammie’s carrot cake because it’s a recipe that was created by Erik Johnson’s own grandmother. It’s loaded with freshly shredded carrots, has an insanely great amount of pineapple, is only lightly sweetened but well-seasoned and then sprinkled with walnuts. That wonderful carrot cake frosting all of us fans love is a real winner with Grammie’s recipe because it’s made with fresh, high-end ingredients. You can taste the difference between it and all the rest. Wow, what a treat! I guess you can tell I’m an Erik’s DeliCafe fan and because of its long history of success in some of the toughest food markets in the state, I’d say I’m among many who try Erik’s DeliCafe once but go back again and again. Now it’s your turn.
