After having a pleasant experience at La Mo Café & Restaurant, it was time to look for a lunch spot and I was excited! As a Mexican food fanatic, I was elated when I came across Memo's Cocina and Tequila Bar in my search for good food in Turlock, California. Memo’s is a very trendy and has an upscale feel type of restaurant. The restaurant is very modern and it felt like I was right at home in LA, dining in for a fancy lunch downtown! I would say that Downtown Turlock definitely has a small town feel, but not too much. For those of you that are familiar with Solvang, California, Turlock reminded me of that beautiful city.
As soon as I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the employees. I was handed 2 thick menus containing the food menu and the drinks menu. Funny enough, the drinks menu was thicker than the food one! Memo's Cocina proudly offers over 100+ tequilas. From widely known tequilas to small, artisan distilleries, you can even try tequilas that are rarely seen outside of Mexico. Memo's Cocina takes pride on their authenticity to Mexican flavors all the while giving it a modern twist. The restaurant is very family friendly, offering a kids menu as well. There were many kids enjoying their meal with the rest of their families.
Dips for Days
It was hard to decide which meal to get since there were so many choices and they all sounded very good. While looking, they served chips and 3 different types of dip/salsa as a complimentary appetizer. I was surprised that it came with 3 dips which consisted of refried beans, salsa, and a creamy avocado dip. This appetizer is expected at any Mexican restaurants which I very much appreciate! As for my entrée, I went with the carne asada with Mexican rice and refried beans. Looking at the portion, it could be more than enough for 2 people! I briefly chatted with the girls next to me, and they mentioned how they can also barely make a dent in their meal. It was so packed and delicious! I enjoyed my carne asada very much as it was cooked perfectly. Not too chewy, not too hard. The Mexican rice and refried beans with cheese were the perfect combo to eat with this hearty meal.
After a hearty meal, I was craving something sweet. Looking at their 6-item dessert menu, I was surprised to see bunuelos! Apparently, Mexican-American families nowadays rarely make them since it does take a lot of work and time. Lucky for me, my boyfriend's abuela makes them during the holidays and it is the most delicious thing ever! It is a fried dough fritter - light and crunchy, sweet and cinnamon-y. It’s a great pairing with a hot cup of coffee especially in the winter.
Sweet Tooth
Even though I love bunuelos, I opted for the Cinnamon Bread Pudding and I was impressed! It came with a hefty amount of vanilla ice cream with cubes of bread pudding. The bread pudding was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and it was topped with sweet milk. I'm usually not a fan of anything super sweet but this had the perfect amount of sweetness to it. It was the perfect thing to end my delicious meal at Memo’s Cocina. Like their meals, their dessert is the perfect amount for sharing with at least 3-4 people.
As for the drinks, I still regret not trying one. This is probably one of the places I've been to with this huge variety of tequilas. Artisan tequila cocktails, tequila flights, Artisan sipping tequilas, and even Mezcal. Aside from tequila, they also serve wine and beer. The next time I wind up in the City of Turlock, I will make sure to try one of their cocktails!
