It's a little cold for ice cream but after a long day of unloading or packing your storage unit, a sweet treat sounds pretty good! Yes, our storage units are in Turlock but from here, we're only 27 minutes from this ice cream shop. It's definitely worth the drive.

Founded in 1979, when the Century Center was brand new, the Modesto Ice Cream Company has a rich history that is as sweet as its signature treats. From its humble beginnings as a small, family-run ice cream parlor, the company has grown to become a beloved institution, earning a reputation for its commitment to quality ingredients and time-honored recipes. Recipes are tried and tested with only the best made daily and served to their customers. The base for their ice cream is locally made at Crystal Creamery, also here in Modesto, and is the best way to start a delicious full-dairy ice cream. A few years ago, nondairy sorbets were also added to their menu.

Community Connection

Bonnie and Corey Acree have been owners since 2012 after seeing a Facebook posting saying they were closing. Bonnie has been a revisiting supporter and customer since she was 15 years old so when she and her husband said it was possibly closing and needed new owners, they jumped at the opportunity to keep it alive.

Beyond their delicious offerings, the Modesto Ice Cream Company is deeply embedded in the local community. The Acree family is passionate about supporting local farmers and businesses, a commitment that is reflected in their use of fresh, seasonal ingredients. The cozy ambiance of the ice cream parlor itself is a testament to their dedication to creating a welcoming space for families, friends, and ice cream enthusiasts of all ages.

After enjoying years of hiring and seeing workers grow into their jobs, the Acree family created the nonprofit in 2018, Enrich and Employ, which helps people with disabilities with jobs and opportunities, unlike most businesses. Diane, Bonnie's sister with Down Syndrome, is a current worker and she says she enjoys working there and is one of the customers' favorites.

One of the biggest (literally) dishes I'd have to say is the fan favorite of Ice Cream Co. has to be the La Palooza. This is a massive serving of 10 pounds of ice cream and topping, perfect to share with your family, sports team, or even a fun business company meeting! I remember getting one of those and it was easily six or eight softball-sized scoops of ice cream, an absolutely crazy amount of ice cream, especially for a group of five seventh graders. Worth it though!
