The grand opening of the Shun Fat (SF) SuperMarket Modesto location was mid October but if you go to see the grocery store any time soon, you’ll notice that the flow of customers has not slowed down.
First Impressions
My wife and I went to see the new Asian market in town and it did not disappoint. Right off the back we noticed the flags that were guiding us into the parking lot followed by the two stone lions standing guard of the store. Having a store like this closer than Fresno or Stockton, especially this big of a store, is a big upgrade for Modesto.
The amount of options that are packed inside is impressive. SF Supermarket is more than just a grocery store, it's a cultural experience and a one-stop shop for diverse ingredients, fresh produce and specialty items you can’t easily find elsewhere.
Diversity In Every Aisle
There is an aisle just for sauces, ranging from soy sauce to katsu sauce to even chili sauce that isn’t Sriracha. There are more than ten aisles and the fresh meat and fish selection was a store of its own. They have fresh fish, fresh as in they’re swimming in a tank in front of you. There’s crabs and lobsters: You name it and they probably have it.
The overall feel of the store reminded me of my childhood going to a similar market out in Fresno. I was able to find the same cookies I used to get when I would go with my grandparents. I was rushed with memories and a sense of home while looking throughout the store. It was a little overwhelming but we agreed we’ll be back for future shopping. Especially with the prices being so low!
It was surprising to see how low the prices were for most of the food they had. There’s another Asian market in town but I have to say, comparing prices, SF SuperMarket has them beat.
What Will This Do For The Community
Being able to offer such a great variety of Asian foods will help others in the community, feel at home and feel included. I believe that the inclusivity that they offer will extend past the Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese or Filipino communities that are targeted with the specific selection of goods offered here. This will introduce Modesto and neighboring cities to new foods or ingredients that they might not have been able to find at their local Raleys or Savemarts.
If you’re looking to try your hand at a new recipe or find an authentic ingredient, you’ll find aisles stocked with sauces, noodles, spices and snacks that represent a spectrum of Asian flavors. Trust me when I say, this store is what we needed in the Central Valley.
