This past weekend was one of the craziest, in the best way possible and most exciting displays of community energy that I've seen in the Turlock area since moving here. And what made it even cooler? This wasn't tied to a major holiday like the Fourth of July or Christmas. There were no fireworks, no big-name headliners, just people. Lots of people. Showing up, hanging out and supporting something local.
The reason for all the commotion was the opening weekend of Turlock's Farmers Market, now expanded alongside something new and equally exciting: “The Market Turlock.”
If you've been to the Turlock Farmers Market before, you probably remember it stretching along West Main Street between South Palm Street and North Center Street, a solid two-block setup that already felt like a staple of downtown weekends from 9-1pm. But this time it felt bigger, noticeably bigger.

Expansion Is Here
The market didn't just stop where it usually does but instead was extended past familiar spots like Treasure Hunters and reached all the way toward Main Street Antiques on South Golden State. That extra stretch added another full block, bringing the market from two blocks to three and trust me, you could feel the difference.
More space meant more vendors, more variety and more reasons to actually take your time walking through. There were fresh fruits and vegetables that looked like they came straight from someone's backyard garden, homemade baked goods that you could smell from halfway down the street. As well as a ton of creative vendors selling everything from handmade clothing to 3D-printed toys and gadgets. I even spotted booths dedicated entirely to dogs with sweet treats, squeaky toys, stylish accessories and more. If you're someone who loves bringing your pet everywhere, this was definitely your scene.
And then there was the crowd.
Community Showed Up!
We showed up around 10 a.m., thinking we'd beat the rush but that idea disappeared quickly. There had to be at least 300 people already there, maybe more. Groups of friends catching up, families with strollers, couples grabbing coffee, kids weaving through the booths, it felt alive. Not forced, not overly commercialized but instead…real community energy.
For a lot of us, especially after everything that came with COVID and quarantine, that kind of atmosphere hits differently. It's easy to forget how much we missed just being around other people, sharing space and experiencing something together. This felt like a reminder of a simpler time back when events like these, the whole community came out to support. It was refreshing to see and be a part of something so cool and especially so local.
But what really took things to another level was,
The Market Turlock
If you haven't heard of them yet, they’re a group organizing local events across the Central Valley, including nearby towns like Hughson. And for this kickoff weekend, they didn't just join the Farmers Market they expanded the entire experience.
Just a short walk down Main Street, past the train tracks between First Street and Lander Avenue, you'd find another stretch of vendors. And not just a few vendors but instead another FULL section packed with booths, food, music and people. It basically turned a regular Saturday morning Farmers Market into a full-on downtown event.
For younger people in Turlock, high schoolers, college students, young families, this kind of setup is exactly what’s been missing. It's something to do that doesn't involve driving out of town. You can grab a coffee, walk around, run into people you know, maybe meet some new ones and actually feel like you're part of something happening in your city.
Of course, with that kind of turnout, there was one challenge: PARKING, that was not fun.
If you're planning to go in the future, just know that finding a spot might take a minute. I circled around for a while before finally landing something and at one point I overheard someone on the phone saying they'd been searching for 20 minutes.

A few areas to check:
- Crane Avenue and South Thor St by KW Recovery Lab.
- South Center St and Marshall St by Bonander GMC.
- East Main St and South Golden State Blvd across from the train tracks.
Those seemed to have some openings if you're willing to walk a bit.
It definitely highlighted something Turlock could improve on long-term, a public parking structure would've been a game-changer that day but honestly, the slight inconvenience felt worth it once you got into the heart of everything.
Dad And Daughter Date
One of my favorite parts of the morning was bringing my daughter along. Even though she's still pretty young, she had a great time just taking it all in. There were dogs everywhere (which, let's be honest, is a guaranteed win), other little kids running around and plenty of things to look at for her.
Some booths were offering free balloon animals and face painting, which was awesome to see. We didn't quite take advantage of that, she's not exactly at the “sit still for face paint” stage yet but it added to the overall vibe. It felt welcoming, especially for families.
The Food Vendors Were GREAT
By the time we made our way through most of the booths, it was getting close to lunchtime, so we decided to try one of the barbecue vendors. We went with a pulled pork sandwich, and I'll be honest it was solid. Easily a 9 out of 10. The kind of food that's messy in the best way and worth every napkin.
The price was a little on the higher side, but that’s kind of expected at events like this. It didn't bother me much knowing that the money was going directly to a local business instead of a big chain. That's really what events like this are all about. Supporting small, local vendors who are putting their time and energy into something real.
I did have one small regret though, we completely missed a spin wheel they had set up where you could win a free side dish. Definitely keeping an eye out for that next time.
Overall, this weekend felt like a great kick off and almost a rebirth for Down Town Turlock.
Turlock's Potential
Turlock has always had potential when it comes to community events, but this felt like a glimpse of what it could consistently be. A downtown that people actually want to spend time in and a place where younger crowds show up, not because there’s nothing else to do but because this is where things are happening.
If this is what the Farmers Market and The Market Turlock are bringing to the table moving forward, it's something worth showing up for. Whether you're going for the food, the shopping, the atmosphere, or just something different to do on a Saturday morning, it's 100% worth checking out.
And if you haven't gone yet, next weekend might be the perfect time to see what all the hype is about.
